MLB Gas Cans Of The Day For Thursday, Sept. 1

Opposing offenses are in great spots

Cleveland Guardians vs. Kyle Bradish (5.63 ERA), Baltimore Orioles

The Guardians are doing their very best to stay ahead of the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central division as the race to the playoffs starts to heat up. Cleveland is a very average offense usually, with nothing truly spectacular about them that stands out. Jose Ramirez has been his usual self this season, but young gun Andres Gimenez has also been a key part of this Guardians offense that continues to shine on a nightly basis. They get Kyle Bradish and the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night.

Bradish put together the best start of his young career in his last outing, and surprisingly it came on the road against a very tough Astros lineup. He lowered his ERA to 5.63 with the unexpected performance and has a K:BB of 79-to-29 across 80 innings this season. I think this was probably just an outlier, and I'll be curious to see how he does this time out.

Atlanta Braves vs. Chad Kuhl (5.17 ERA), Colorado Rockies

The defending champion Atlanta Braves are once again raking on offense, thanks in large part to Austin Riley and Matt Olson. Ronald Acuna Jr. always brings the power as well, and this offense is totally stacked to destroy bad pitching on a nightly basis. Great news for them too, because the Colorado Rockies are in town, and they always bring some really poor pitching with them. Thursday it will be Chad Kuhl who gets the nod on the hill against this lineup.

In his last start, Kuhl allowed three runs on five hits and a walk over five innings against the Mets. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. He was making his first start since coughing up nine runs against the Padres at the beginning of August, with a stint on the injured list in between. He'll carry a 5.17 ERA into this one against a very good Atlanta Braves team, so I'll definitely be looking to fade him here.

Boston Red Sox vs. Glenn Otto (4.79 ERA), Texas Rangers

The Red Sox are not a team that I really want to be backing right now with how poor they have been offensively lately. Rafael Devers and Xander Bogaerts can only do so much for a team before the rest of of the squad start to weigh them down. Still, it is hard to pass up an opportunity to fade Glenn Otto and the Rangers.

In his last start, Otto earned the win against the Tigers, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three and walking two over five innings. It wasn't a pretty outing at all. He threw just 48 of 80 pitches for strikes across four innings, but was able to pick up the win thanks to an offensive outburst from his team. Otto has only completed six innings five times in 20 starts, whether that is a team decision or because of his performance, I couldn't tell you. This four-run stinker raised Otto's ERA to 4.79, and he is an easy fade against almost any team.
