The Labor Day schedule doesn’t give us a lot of great YRFI options. But the Astros and Reds might be an underrated pick. Cincinnati rookie Julian Aguiar gets the start for the Reds. He owns a 6.43 ERA over his only three starts, giving up a first-inning run in two of those three starts. That includes giving up two runs against the A’s in his last start. While Houston has slipped to the middle of the pack in first-inning runs, the trio of Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, and Yordan Alvarez is still a good bet to greet the rookie rudely and come away with some runs in the first inning.
On the other side, Justin Verlander takes the bump for Houston. At age 41, Verlander is finally just another starting pitcher. He has a 4.16 ERA on the season and a 4.50 ERA in the first inning. Of course, the Reds are in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. But Verlander is still an average pitcher right now who gave up a first-inning run in one of his two starts in August. Keep in mind that the Reds scoring against Verlander is just a Plan B because the Astros are far more likely to score in the top of the first, which is why this game is one of the top YRFI bets on Labor Day.
The Diamondbacks and Dodgers rank first and third, respectively, in first-inning runs, so we have to take this game regardless of the pitching matchup. Jack Flaherty has been largely reliable in the first inning this year, posting a 3.52 ERA. He’s also had a great run since joining the Dodgers. But there are a few Diamondbacks who have had success against Flaherty in the past. That includes Corbin Carroll, who is 5 for 11 with five runs scored over the first three games of this series. He has once again become a spark plug for the D’Backs, who have scored 29 runs over the first three games of this series, making them a clear threat to Flaherty in the first inning.
Meanwhile, Eduardo Rodriguez is still trying to find his legs four starts into the season. In fairness, Rodriguez has yet to allow a first-inning run in any of those four starts. The D’Backs have also won all four of those games. But he still has a 5.06 ERA and has to face a potent Los Angeles lineup. To his credit, Rodriguez has good numbers against Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts in his career. But if either one manages to reach base, Freddie Freeman is 5 for 11 in his career against Rodriguez, which could be a recipe for first-inning runs.
A "Yes Runs First Inning" bet, also known as YRFI, is a wager in baseball betting on whether at least one run will be scored in the first inning of the game. It's the opposite of a "No Runs First Inning" (NRFI) bet.
For your YRFI bet to win, you only need one team to score a run in the first inning. This could happen with just one hit, like a home run, or through a combination of baserunning and RBIs (Runs Batted In).
YRFI bets are a popular choice because they offer the chance for a quick win or loss, with the action decided within the first three outs for each team. However, they also tend to have lower odds compared to NRFI bets since statistically, runs are more likely to be scored throughout a game than not at all in the first inning.
Predicting win rates for Yes Run First Inning (YRFI) bets is tricky. Historically, runs are generally scored throughout a game, making No Runs First Inning (NRFI) bets slightly more likely to win overall. However, the real key lies in analyzing each matchup.
Pitchers with a tendency to walk batters or struggle early could open the door for first-inning runs. Strong batting lineups facing weaker pitchers on offense-friendly fields with good weather also increase YRFI chances. Because of these factors, sportsbooks set lower odds for YRFI bets compared to NRFI bets, reflecting their higher statistical likelihood of winning.
Maximizing your win rate for your YRFI bets today requires a deeper dive and a concrete strategy. Here are some key tips to consider:
Know Your Pitchers: Focus on starting pitchers with a history of allowing runs early. Look for high walk rates, a tendency to struggle in the first inning (inflated first-inning ERA), or pitchers facing unfamiliar lineups. These factors can create opportunities for baserunners and early scoring.
Sharpshooters at the Top: Analyze team batting lineups. Teams with strong hitters at the top of the order, known for getting on base and generating power, pose a significant threat in the first inning. Look for matchups where these "hot bats" face pitchers who might struggle to contain them.
Park Power: Don't underestimate the impact of the ballpark. Hitter-friendly parks with short fences or favorable weather conditions can tilt the odds in favor of YRFI bets. Warmer temperatures and parks known for producing more home runs can increase the chance of early offense.
Beyond Statistics: Stay updated on recent news and trends. Is a pitcher coming off an injury? Is a key hitter slumping? Injuries or unexpected lineups can affect performance and influence the likelihood of first-inning runs.
