MLB Gas Cans Of The Day For Friday, Aug. 26

Opposing offenses are in great spots

Washington Nationals vs. Mike Minor (6.44 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

The Nationals are not a team that I would back lightly, as they have a horrible roster that is composed of a bunch of scraps right now. It isn't that they don't have any talent, they do, but they are far from the team they were just a few years ago. It has been a painful last few seasons for Nats fans after winning the World Series what feels like a lifetime ago, but maybe this matchup with Cincinnati can bring them some happiness for a day.

The Reds are starting Mike Minor, who has been a regular on this article throughout the season. In his last start, he allowed five runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out one in 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Pirates. Wins have been hard to come by for Minor this season, but he got a ton of offensive support from the Reds and earned his first win since June 13 despite giving up five runs. He has given up at least four runs in four of his six starts since the All-Star break and has posted a 6.75 ERA and 1.79 WHIP in 30.2 innings during that time.

Houston Astros vs. Kyle Bradish (6.25 ERA), Baltimore Orioles

The Astros are well on their way to another playoff appearance in 2022, and despite cheating to win the World Series in 2017, they have been remarkably consistent at winning since. Even after guys like George Springer and Carlos Correa have departed for more money, they have remained one of the premier teams in baseball over the last five years. They are primed for a big game here against Baltimore and their starting pitcher, Kyle Bradish.

In his last start, Bradish took the loss to Boston, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking none across 5.2 innings. He has not gone six innings or more since May 10 and has done it only twice on the year, limiting his opportunities to earn both wins and quality starts. He also has allowed three or more runs to score in nine of 15 games. Bradish's three-run outing actually lowered his ERA to a poor 6.25.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Bryse Wilson (5.74 ERA), Pittsburgh Pirates

The Phillies will get their superstar back in this game, so it is a prime spot to take them to demolish a guy who has been very inconsistent on the mound. Bryce Harper is sure to be fired up, and his team with him. Philadelphia is a team that I have had my eye on as a possible sleeper team to reach the World Series if they can manage to make the playoffs. They have the offense to do it, and the pitching has been solid. They can start their run with a win here against Pittsburgh and Bryse Wilson.

In his last start, Wilson allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings in a 5-4 win over the Reds. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. All three runs against Wilson came via the long ball. Wilson completed seven innings for the first time in his MLB career and lowered his season ERA to 5.74 through 78.1 frames. When you give up three homers and still manage to lower your ERA, it says a lot about how your season is going.
