Can Tua Tagovailoa Take Another Leap Forward?

BetMGM's The Daily Tip hosts Michael Jenkins and Chelsa Messinger discuss Dolphins' QB Tua Tagovailoa's new look and if he can build off of his success last season

Tua's New Look

On a recent episode of BetMGM's The Daily Tip, BetQL Network hosts Michael Jenkins and Chelsa Messinger got into the topic of Dolphins' QB Tua Tagovailoa's new appearance, as he was spotted at training camp looking like an entirely different man.

"Have you seen Tua Tagovailoa's new look?" asked Jenkins. "He's dropped 10 to 15 pounds. He's shaved his beard. You would not recognize him. He's looking for a contract extension, and he is looking to surprise us."

Jenkins went on to talk about how an athlete has a year-round training schedule, and their need to keep up with their body. "I feel like when you're talking about the quarterback position, just like very little things can make big differences, right? But I will say this, if he's doing this because he's staying in shape and making a commitment to working year-round and his body is just better and healthier, then that can't be a bad thing."

Injury Impact On Appearance?

Messinger weighed in with her thoughts on why Tagovailoa bulked up so much last season, and the impact of quarterback physique on a player's performance. "Do you think he gained some of that weight last year just to stay healthy? I know it sounds like, you know, it wouldn't be the case, but somebody who's always getting hit, somebody who's always taking concussions, maybe he's like, all right, I need some cushion on this body because, damn it, I need to stay on the field." she said.

"Do you think this translates to Dolphins' wins or losses? I always think that it's something that's worth talking about because obviously, the quarterback is the most important position on the field, but how much is it really going to affect him? Tua is somebody who can run around a little bit, but it's not like it's his number one characteristic if you're looking at Madden."

Tagovailoa passed for 4,624 yards in 2023, the most he has ever thrown in a single season. He also threw 29 touchdowns to 14 interceptions and overall ended the season with a 101.1 QB rating. You can get Tua to win NFL MVP next season at 25/1 odds and Offensive Player of the Year at 80/1.
