How The Colts Can Beat The Cowboys In Week 13

Here's how Indy can pull off the upset

The Indianapolis Colts are off a short week after playing on Monday Night Football and now travel to Dallas to take on a Cowboys team that has enjoyed some extended rest. The Cowboys last played on Thanksgiving when they beat the Giants for their second-straight win. Indianapolis has only won one of its last five games and is 1-2 under new head coach Jeff Saturday. The Cowboys are double-digit favorites heading into Sunday, which means an outright win for the Colts is going to be pretty unlikely. However, there are a few things they can do to keep this one close. Scroll down to take a look at why our model seems to think the Colts have a chance at covering the spread.

Keep Your Quarterback Upright

For starters, keeping quarterback Matt Ryan on his feet is going to be really important in the Colts having success on offense. That might seem terribly obvious, but Indianapolis has struggled to do so this season. The Colts have allowed 43 sacks on the year, the most in the NFL. Ryan has taken 32 of those, which is the fifth most.

On the other side of that, Dallas’ defense ranks first with 45 total sacks, 12.0 of those coming from Micah Parsons. Slowing down the Cowboys pass rush and allowing Ryan time in the pocket is going to be a tall task, but it will play a major role in the Colts success on Sunday.

Secondary Needs to Shine

Indianapolis will also give themselves a chance at success against the Cowboys if their secondary shows up to play. Safeties Kenny Moore and Rodney McLeod, and cornerback Stephon Gilmore headline a defensive unit that has been the most consistent part of this team all season.

They’ll have their work cut out for them with CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup lining up across from them. In his last five outings, Lamb has hauled in two 100-yard receiving games, so slowing him down is going to be key for this Colts defense.
