  • In the absence of key contributors, the Brooklyn Nets hope Caris LeVert can become the star they envision in Orlando.

  • Without Spencer Dinwiddie, DeAndre Jordan, and Taurean Prince, the Nets will be searching for breakout performances.

  • The loss of Dinwiddie means LeVert will be handling the ball more than ever.

  • Brooklyn is -250 to drop to the eight-seed and they're +2100 to miss the postseason altogether.

Time to Shine

Caris LeVert has generated buzz around the league the past three seasons as a potential star. With no Kyrie Irving or Spencer Dinwiddie, LeVert can solidify himself as Brooklyn’s fourth star next season alongside the two and Kevin Durant. The Michigan alum has seen steady improvement over his injury-filled four-year career.

In the Nets 2019 first-round playoff defeat to the Philadelphia 76ers, LeVert paced his D’Angelo Russell-led team in scoring, posting 21.5 points per game. LeVert displayed deadeye shooting with the in-the-bag flash you would expect from a top option over those five contests. Before the NBA suspension, the Columbus native experienced a career-best year, putting up 17.7 points and 4.1 assists per game. This season also saw LeVert explode for 51 points, including 37 in the 4th quarter and overtime of a Brooklyn win over the Boston Celtics. Orlando offers the perfect platform for LeVert to establish himself as a star.

Replacing Key Pieces

With Dinwiddie out for the restart, so will his 20.6 points per game. Include DeAndre Jordan, and another 8.3 points are lost. LeVert is the best option to pick up the suddenly available scoring opportunities. The former first-round pick shoots 38.1 percent on 4.8 three-point attempts pet contest on the season, while also scoring on 66.7 percent of his cuts to the basket. LeVert is also efficient while handling the ball and driving to the basket. He finds himself third on the team in drives per game at 14.1 behind Dinwiddie’s 17.1 and Irving’s 14.2. Like many of LeVert’s numbers, you can expect that to go up.

New Floor General

Dinwiddie will be missed for more than just his scoring, but his facilitating as well. With 6.8 assists per game, Dinwiddie was Brooklyn’s primary ball handler. LeVert, in all likelihood, will inherit that role. He currently stands as the Nets active assists leader with 4.1 assists per game. Head coach Jacques Vaughn may want to increase LeVert’s minutes at point guard where the swingman has spent just 5.0 percent of his minutes. Considering Dinwiddie spent 40 percent of his time at the point with Chris Chiozza and Tyler Johnson as the other options, it would be within Brooklyn’s best interest to make LeVert the primary ball handler inside the Orlando bubble.
