Underrated Frontcourt

The Orlando Magic big men, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vucevic, are not really household names, but they’ve quietly become one of the best frontcourts in the Eastern Conference. Gordon and Vucevic went on a tear offensively before the season’s abrupt suspension in March. In his last 25 games, Gordon averaged 16.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. In his last 25 games, Vucevic averaged 20.3 points, 10.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 0.8 steals per game.

The Orlando duo average more points than the Indiana Pacers frontcourt of Myles Turner and Domantas Sabonis. The Magic duo average more rebounds than the Toronto Raptors frontcourt of Pascal Siakam and Serge Ibaka. Gordon and Vucevic played so well offensively down the stretch that the over was hit in 12-straight games involving the Magic.

Playmaking Ability

Gordon and Vucevic are an effective frontcourt because their skillsets are good fits for the modern NBA that requires forwards and centers to do more than just score in the paint and rebound. Gordon and Vucevic are capable three-point shooters who can stretch the court for their teammates. The duo has connected successfully on a combined 150 three-pointers this season, which represents over 20 percent of Orlando’s field goals from deep on the season.

The Magic big men are also capable distributors. The duo averaged a combined 9.2 assists per game over the last 25 games of the season. This 25-game average would exceed the combined assists totals for the Milwaukee Bucks frontcourt of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez, the Philadelphia 76ers frontcourt of Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris, Toronto's Siakam and Ibaka, and Indiana's Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner.

Doing More With Less

Gordon and Vucevic have been fairly durable this season. They’ve only missed a combined 18 games, which is a lower total than the number of games missed by the Embiid/Harris and Siakam/Ibaka duos. Gordon and Vucevic also have to do more with less than their Eastern Conference counterparts. While other frontcourts have accomplished point guards to deliver them the. ball, Gordon and Vucevic rely on Markelle Fultz and DJ Augustin. Though Fultz and Augustin are serviceable point guards, they are nowhere near the same stratosphere as Ben Simmons, Malcolm Brogdon, Kyle Lowry, and Eric Bledsoe.

Entering The Bubble

The Magic will be the only team with “home court” advantage when the regular-season resumes in Orlando. They're currently the eighth-seed in the Eastern Conference and will face the seventh-seed Brooklyn Nets on July 31st. The Magic are currently 5.5-point favorites against the Nets, per DraftKings Sportsbook. Bettors should lay the points with Orlando, as the Magic have dominated losing teams all season. The Nets will be without the services of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Spencer Dinwiddle, DeAndre Jordan, Wilson Chandler, and Taurean Prince for the remainder of the season. Orlando's underrated big men could make a serious splash when the NBA resumes play inside the bubble.
