NL MVP Sleeper Pick: Nolan Arenado Worth A Look

Cardinals third-baseman not out of it yet

There are many names in the race for the NL MVP right now, and a crowded room at the top with five guys all under +1000 to win the award. While there is obviously a reason for those odds, perhaps it is best to take a look as some players with longer odds that have the potential to open the door and add their name to that crowded room. This can net huge profits at the end of the season, so let's take a look at a player that currently has +2000 odds or longer and assess whether or not he could be a good bet to line your pockets in the future.

Nolan Arenado is a curious case this season, and right now, you can find him at DraftKings at +2500 to win the NL MVP. He has really started to cool off after a scorching hot start to the season that saw him hitting .375 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in April. That type of start escalated him to the top of the odds board after that month, but a very poor May has seen his odds fly down to 25/1. In the month of May, Arenado batted .196 with four home runs and 15 RBIs, which was among the worst months of his career from a hitting standpoint. That could be used to our advantage, because the likeliness that he stays this bad all season is very low, and he is more likely to pick things up again at the plate. In fact, he's already started to see that pop in his bat increase, hitting .326 with two home run's and nine RBIs.

When you add in his always impressive defense at the corner, it is easy to make an argument that Arenado certainly could win NL MVP when all is said and done. The only reason to think he couldn't is that he has a teammate that has played even better than he has, which can be a huge blow to his chances at winning the award. Paul Goldschmidt is sitting at +400 to win the award due to his incredible season this far. However, Goldschmidt is due to have some regression, and that's when Arenado can step in and take over. St. Louis needs these two players to be at their absolute best if they want to win a championship.

Not saying that it will happen, but I would venture to say that his odds are going to increase here at some point. It is worth a bet at 25/1 on a player that has been in contention for this award almost every year of his career.
