MLB AL MVP Odds: Can Anyone Catch Mike Trout?

Trout big favorite to win AL MVP award, but Ohtani presents value

The overwhelming favorite to win the AL MVP since day one has been Mike Trout. He currently sits at +220 to win the award at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Coming in behind him in the current AL MVP odds are Shohei Ohtani (+1200), Alex Bregman (+1400), Jose Ramirez (+1600), and Aaron Judge (+1800) to round out the top-five.

Trout is no stranger to the award, as he has won it three times: 2014, 2016, 2019.

It's still early in the season, but the Los Angeles Angels are off to a nice 7-4 start. They currently sit in first place in the AL West. Trout is not leading in many offensive categories, yet. But, he is still invoking fear in opposing pitchers, leading the league with 11 base on balls.

He currently has 14 hits, 4 home runs, 8 runs batted in and an OPS of 1.273. Trout is also currently top-five in WAR, an usual occurrence for him.

With how dominant the center fielder has been, the question remains...can anyone other than Trout win this award?

One player that presents some value is Trout's teammate, Ohtani. On April 1st, when the MLB season opened, Ohtani was around +3300 at most books. Since then, his odds to win AL MVP have shortened mightily to +1200.

There isn't a lot the talented Ohtani can't do. He can pitch and hit, and he's actually great at both facets of the game. The 26-year-old can throw fire at over 100 MPH and hit bombs over 400 feet.

In fact, he might be the most unique player in baseball. Case in point:

Baseball is a marathon and injuries will always be a concern with both of the aforementioned studs. But, I do see tremendous value in getting down some money on Ohtani right now. Trout's dominance presents opportunity for us to get 12-1 odds on a stud. And, if the Angels continue to play well, Ohtani's Babe Ruth like season will pickup media and fan attention. There's also the chance that voters might get a little Trout fatigue, something we see a lot in the NBA and their MVP voting.

While Trout isn't slowing down anytime soon, sprinkling some coin on Ohtani can payoff come season's end. If I still don't have you convinced, watch this video and tell me that you don't think he can win this award!
