NHL Second Period ATS Betting Explained
Betting the 2nd period against the spread is one of the most popular ways to bet on the NHL but it can be a little difficult to understand, so we are here to help. Betting against the spread or as it is more commonly called in hockey the puck line has a bit of a learning curve to it, so if you aren’t up to speed with the way NHL puck lines work make sure you head over to our page about that. When you are betting a 2nd period ATS you are betting only on the result of the second period with the puck line that is set by the bookmakers. For this type of bet only the second period score matters, and it does not matter what the score was at the end of the first period. If your team wins the second period against the puck line your bet will cover.
The team that is favored to win the 2nd period will be listed with a negative number (ie. -.5) and that is the number of goals that they need to win the period by. The underdog will be listed with the inverse of the favorite (+.5) this is how many goals they can lose the period by. Since NHL periods can end in tie the puck line will usually include half a goal. If the puck line does not include a half and the score of the second period is tied the bet will result in a “push” and all bets will be refunded.
NHL 2nd Period ATS Example:
The Montreal Canadians are playing the Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto and after an intense first period the score is Canadians 0 - Maple Leafs 1. Going into the second period the oddsmakers have set the 2nd period puck line at +/- .5 with the Leafs favored. After a big power play the Canadians are able to get on the board and tie the game at 1-1. Seconds before the horn sounds for the end of the 2nd period the Maple Leafs are able to sneak a goal in and bring the score to 2-1 Maple Leafs. At this point the Maple Leafs are winning the game but they did not win the 2nd period. The 2nd period ended in a 1-1 tie with both teams scoring. If you bet the Maple Leafs (-.5) your bet did not cover because factoring in the puck line the 2nd period score was Maple Leafs .5 - Canadians 1.
