Dan Karpuc: UCLA -24 vs. Sacramento State
College hoops is back! Early in the year, I like to target proven teams and players against unproven programs, especially in today’s transfer-happy NCAA. This fits that formula, as Mick Cronin’s UCLA squad is coming off Final Four and Sweet 16 finishes over the last two years. The Bruins return a star backcourt in Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Tyger Campbell and a freshmen class that features five-star recruits Amari Bailey and Adem Bona.

I chose to write about this game in today’s NCAAB Betting Guide because I think this is a spot we can attack on opening night. This is Sacramento State head coach David Patrick’s first game with a program that welcomed six transfers on their 13-man roster and the team also has a completely new coaching staff. While Sacramento State made some moves to rebuild, the Bruins are in a completely different class, have legitimate star power from upperclassmen and underclassmen and one of the best coaches in the sport at the helm of their program. That will require UCLA’s second unit to stay focused and on their game if (when) this game gets out of hand, which makes me confident in a big win without a major threat of a backdoor cover. UCLA was 9-5-1 ATS at home last year and I expect them to win by at least 25.

Brad Pinkerton: Saint Peter's -8 vs. NJIT

You might be thinking I only picked this game to recall Saint Peter's incredible tourney run last season that won a lot of people, including our readers, a lot of money. If so, you'd be partially right. But one of the things we noted about Saint Peter's last March was that they were outstanding against the spread, going 23-10 ATS, including 12-6 as the favorite. NJIT did not experience such success, going 13-15 ATS, including a solid-yet-unspectacular 10-9 as the underdog. Sadly, last year's mustachioed tourney star Doug Edert has shaved his mustache and transferred to Bryant, but I'm looking for Saint Peter's to carry on without him and cover against NJIT in their season-opener. BetQL is rating the Peacocks -8 as a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ value, too.

Lucy Burdge: Villanova -15 vs. La Salle
Villanova is coming off a 30-8 season in which they made it to the Final Four, and now they head into this season with a new head coach in Kyle Neptune after the retirement of Jay Wright. Neptune served as an assistant with Villanova from 2013-2021, so he has familiarity with the team. Meanwhile, LaSalle went 11-19 overall last season and they start this season with their own new head coach in Fran Dunphy. I see a lot of advantages here for Villanova to start this season off with a bang and a covered spread, especially since they have Caleb Daniels and Eric Dixon returning.
