#22 Michigan vs. IPFW Prediction

Coming off an up-and-down Sweet 16 season that notably featured head coach Juwan Howard getting suspended for punching a Wisconsin assistant coach, Michigan will look to make some strides forward this year. However, they’re going to look a lot different. Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate were both second-round NBA Draft picks. Point guard DeVante’ Jones graduated, as did Eli Brooks. Three other players transferred. That means All-American center Hunter Dickinson is going to shoulder a ton of the load for this team coming off of a campaign in which he averaged 18.6 points and 8.6 rebounds in 32.3 minutes. Howard’s son Jett will likely start on the wing as a 6’8 pro prospect and talented Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn and sophomore (former McDonalds All-American) Kobe Bufkin will likely get opportunities to start in the backcourt. This Wolverines team finished 74th in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency rankings last season and went 15-19 ATS, so keep that in mind before putting too many units on them to cover if you’re on them.

Don’t overlook this Purdue University Fort Wayne hoops team. They went 21-13 SU last season before losing to Drake in the CBI and were ranked No. 17 in the preseason CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. IPFW went 19-12 ATS last season and will return a very experienced roster. Per the school website, their roster has an average age of 21 and they have a combined 35 combined seasons of NCAA collegiate experience. Led by senior guard Jarred Godfrey (who has averaged 15.2, 16.2 and 15.6 points over the last three seasons), this group has two other 1,000-point scorers: Daiman Chong Qui and Anthony Roberts. Roberts is a transfer who posted 1,312 points over three seasons at Division II St. Cloud State and averaged 20 points and eight boards per game in his final two years there. Last season, this club earned a share of the Horizon League regular season title, held a lead for five minutes or more in all but four games and ranked in the Top 25 in steals (19th with 8.8) and three-pointers per game (21st with 9.4). Head coach Jon Coffman has also gone 61-47 ATS as an underdog while coaching IPFW.

My Lean: IPFW ATS. The levels of talent are clearly uneven, but I’m going to go with the more experienced team coming off a strong season. Outside of Dickinson, there are a lot of question marks for Michigan, as was clear in their 88-75 exhibition win over Ferris State a few days ago.

#7 Duke vs. Jacksonville Prediction

The main storyline coming out of Duke is the new man at the helm of the team. Jon Scheyer was hand-picked to take over by Mike Krzyzewski and will take over a program that just won 32 games, went to the Final 4 and then lost Paolo Banchero, AJ Griffin, Mark Williams, Wendell Moore and Trevor Keels to the NBA Draft. Jeremy Roach is the only returning difference-maker from last year’s team and transfer Jacob Grandison (who played two years at Holy Cross and two years at Illinois) is also expected to play a large role, as will five-star freshmen Kyle Filipowski, Dariq Whitehead and Dereck Lively II. However, Whitehead and Lively are both dealing with minor injuries and are game-day decisions to play in this opener. Four more freshmen will come off the bench for this young group, but we should expect this program to continue thriving in Coach K’s absence.

Jacksonville finished last season 19-8-1 (70.4%) ATS, which made them attractive from a betting perspective all year. Not only that, but they went 21-10 SU in coach Jordan Mincy’s first season. That was enough for him to win the Joe Hall Award, which is presented to the nation’s top first-year head coach. Leading scorer Kevion Nolan and leading rebounder Bryce Workman will both return alongside other experienced players for this program. Recently, Duke’s Scheyer revealed that the Blue Devils didn’t have a full practice together until last week due to some confusion created around the draft and the transfer portal, so that could also give Jacksonville a small edge when it comes to keeping this game somewhat close.

My Lean: Jacksonville ATS. Duke’s inability to practice as a group until a few days ago matters, as does the fact that Whitehead and Lively both might not play (or will be limited). I obviously expect Duke to win, but it could take them some time to get acclimated.

#8 UCLA vs. Sacramento State Prediction

Things are looking up for Mick Cronin’s UCLA program, as the Bruins have gone to the Final Four and Sweet 16 in back-to-back years. This team will be led by its backcourt, as All-American Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Tyger Campbell will make up one of the best guard duos in the country. “We’ve got two horses this year. We’re going to run them,” Cronin said at media day of Jaquez and Campbell. “We’re excited about this season. We’ve got five guys on our team that have played the Final Four, but we’ve got a lot of freshmen as well. …It always makes it nice when you’ve got two guys that could both win Player of the Year in the league on your team.” Highly-touted freshmen Amari Bailey and center Adem Bona both have a ton of potential. This might be Cronin’s best team so far at UCLA and it’ll be interesting to see how they fare in the Pac-12. I think they have the talent to run through it and dominate all year.

This game signals the start of a new era for Sacramento State, who hired former Oklahoma and Arkansas assistant David Patrick to take over as head coach. Six players on this 13-man roster are transfers and the team added 19-year-old forward Kiir Kiir Chol Deng from the NBA global academy, who is arguably the best pro prospect this program has ever had. Senior guard Gianni Hunt also transferred in from Oregon State, but overall, it’s difficult to see this team hanging with a far superior and cohesive UCLA bunch.

My Lean: UCLA ATS. I don’t think this one will be remotely close.
