MLB Play of the Day for Thursday, June 17: Colorado Rockies vs. Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers travel to Coors Field to kick off a series with the Colorado Rockies. Tied atop the National League Central, Milwaukee is looking to strengthen it’s grip on the division against the 28-41 Rockies.

Milwaukee Brewers (-160, 10) vs. Colorado Rockies - 8:40 PM EST

The Brewers come to Colorado after getting swept at home by the Reds, but will have ace Brandon Woodruff on the mound. 

Woodruff has been excellent this season, sporting a 1.52 ERA in 13 starts. Woodruff should be in good shape despite the high altitude of Colorado where the balls fly, he is sporting an above average 47% ground ball rate this season. 

The issue for the Brewers has been their offense, 28th in wRC+ and 29th in slugging percentage. Milwaukee will face the Rockies ace German Marquez, who despite a 4.6 ERA has a FIP of 3.54. He’s been plagued by bad luck in the field this season, but has still been able to throw a league leading two complete games in 2021. 

While the Brewers offense is a concern, the Rockies is even worse. The team is last in the MLB in wRC+, but they do thrive at home, hitting .281 at Coors Field. The Rockies use their home field advantage quite a bit, using the hitter friendly park as a way to scrap together wins. The team has scored 215 runs at home, but just 83 on the road this season.

If Woodruff struggles in the transition to the altitude, the Brewers are backed by the seventh best bullpen, according to FanGraphs WAR data. With flame throwing Josh Hader, 11 hits and two earned runs in 27 ⅔ innings this season, Milwaukee’s pitching staff is up to the task to limit the Rockies strong home offense.
