Miraculous Marlins Campaign

The fact that the Miami Marlins are alive for a playoff spot heading into the final weekend of the season is a huge step forward in the rebuilding process. However, it’d be a shame to come all this way and not reach the postseason. Miami is in a tight race with the Philadelphia Phillies for second-place in the NL East, which would guarantee them a playoff spot. The Marlins could also earn a Wild Card spot if the Phillies pass them in the standings. Miami’s best bet is taking care of their own business against the New York Yankees this weekend and not relying on a jumbled Wild Card race.

Struggling Southpaw

Lefty Trevor Rogers will get the start for Miami on Saturday. In this crazy season, the Marlins have had to rely on many pitchers with no prior experience in the big leagues, including Rogers. Five starts in double-A last year is the highest level of experience Rogers has had prior to this season. Despite a promising start in his first two outings, Rogers has fallen on hard times in September, posting a 9.56 ERA over his last four starts. The lefty hasn’t pitched more than 4.0 innings in any of his last three starts, which means the Marlins may have to lean on their bullpen in a game they need to win.

Regaining Stars

The Yankees are one of the last teams the Marlins want to see in must-win games late in the season. For what it’s worth, the Yankees have been a little sluggish lately outside of a 12-run output against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. However, with Giancarlo Stanton, Gleyber Torres, and Aaron Judge, New York’s lineup is more or less at full strength at the moment. The silver lining for the Marlins is that nobody outside of Gio Urshela is swinging a particularly hot bat at the moment. Nevertheless, New York poses a significant challenge to Rogers and Miami on Saturday.
