Dan Karpuc's SEC Championship Best Bets

Florida (+3500): Quarterback Anthony Richardson’s dual threat ability should firmly put him into the Heisman conversation and we’ve often seen that one player’s ascension can have a transformative effect on an entire team. Not only that, but new Gators head coach Billy Napier is coming off a dominant four-year run at Louisiana and was on two championship staffs under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2011 and 2015, so he seemingly knows what it takes to win.

LSU (+3500): Say what you want about Brian Kelly, but you can’t ignore the fact that he’s a winning head football coach. After he re-installed a winning culture at Notre Dame, you have to think that he will succeed at LSU given all of the resources at his disposal.

Matt Horner’s SEC Champion Value Pick

Texas A&M +1200: There is simply too much value at the number that Texas A&M is at right now not to back them to win the SEC in 2022. While Alabama is the favorite and probably should be, there is no value at all in betting them. The defending champion Georgia Bulldogs come in next, then the odds jump exponentially to A&M at +1200. That is just too large of a gap if you ask me, and I’m willing to take the chance with the Aggies that they can finally take down Georgia and Alabama. There are a few reasons why I think they could do this, so let’s get into them.

Let’s get the very obvious out of the way first. Everyone is riding high right now with coach Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies for signing the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation. That clearly will help them better compete with the two heavyweights in the conference, even if the players are young and unproven at the college level. A double-digit win season is certainly not out of the range of possibility, and reaching the CFB Playoff should be the goal. Last season, an early injury to QB Haynes King really set the offense back, but with him returning to duty and the additions of LSU transfer Max Johnson and freshman Connor Weigman, the passing game should be in much better shape in 2022. That will be a key part to Texas A&M contending with the big boys, as while they beat Alabama last season, the team didn’t get enough explosive plays as a whole to really compete in the overall season. Evan Stewart and Ainias Smith headline a great receiving corp that should be revamped with better QB play. RB Devon Achane should star in this offense, as his peers did before him, and the offensive line also returns three starters.

Defensively, this was one of the best units in all of college football last season, holding teams to an incredible 15.9 points per game. They lost a few key players up front, but with the new recruiting class coming in, they will still have serious talent up there. Even if the young guys struggle in the beginning, they have perhaps the best secondary in the nation to back them up and lock things down.

I think QB play will play a massive part in how successful Texas A&M is next season, and if they can be more explosive and keep turnovers on the low, they can compete with anyone. At 12/1 odds, that is crazy value that I will take a piece of thanks to the chalk on the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs.
