Dan Karpuc's 2022 Big 12 Championship Best Bet

Oklahoma State (+700): Quarterback Spencer Sanders will be back for his fourth season at the helm of this offense and the Cowboys will return most of one of the best pass-rushing defenses in college football last season. This team has a lot of older, upperclassmen talent on the defensive front and that could certainly make a positive impact in their favor.

Matt Horner's Big 12 Winner Value Bet

The Pick: Baylor (+900): The Big 12 Conference is different from that of a lot of the others in that there is no easy clear-cut favorite to win it. In fact, the favorite right now is Oklahoma, so you get plus money taking the betting favorite. That’s because even the books don’t know who might come out on top in this conference, which is why there is great value on the board in picking a team with a better payout. While the Sooners are a talented team worthy of being the favorite, are they really that much better than Texas, Oklahoma State or Baylor? I certainly don’t think they are, so I am going with a team that has a higher payout and that I believe has just as good a chance as anyone to win the Big 12.

I like the Baylor Bears to get the job done and win the conference. They are currently sitting at +900 at BetMGM, the fourth-highest odds to win it. Like I mentioned before, I don’t see that much of a disparity between them and OK State, Texas and Oklahoma. The Bears are the reigning Big 12 Champions, so with this conference being a toss up, I found it hard to go against head coach Dave Aranda’s squad at such a good number. Defense was the strength of Baylor’s team last season, holding opponents to 5.2 yards per snap and 18.3 points per game. They lost a few of their best players on that side of the ball, but they still boast a talented defense anchored by nose tackle Siaki Ika and one of the best defensive lines in the country. The biggest concern will be the secondary, in which they only have two returning starters.

The offense, while not the greatest unit in the world, made serious strides last season. They averaged just 23.3 points per game and 4.4 yards per play in 2020, but took off in 2021, averaging 31.6 points per game and 6.3 yards per play. Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes determined that Blake Shapen would start at QB for the Bears over Gerry Bohannon, which will make their passing attack much more lethal in my opinion. They have one of the best offensive lines in the country to keep him upright, but questions remain at the skill positions. The team lost stars like Tyquan Thornton and R.J. Sneed at receiver, while also losing Abram Smith at RB. They will need to find guys to replace them, but the team is set up for success with a better QB and a talented, deep roster.
