Michigan (+900): After Jim Harbaugh finally broke through and made the College Football Playoff last season, the Wolverines are loaded with upperclassmen with plenty of experience and should be poised for another outstanding year. At +900, there's a nice bit of value to take advantage of.

Matt Horner's 2022 Big Ten Championship Best Bet

Purdue (+2500). Let’s just be honest right out of the gates here. Ohio State is very likely to win the Big Ten this upcoming season. They are clearly the best team in the conference in terms of talent and experience, while returning superstar QB C.J. Stroud. The Buckeyes are loaded, but do you know what else is loaded? Their number to win the conference, sitting at a crazy -250 at BetMGM right now. Go ahead and take OSU if you want, they very likely will win, but there is zero chance that I am laying -250 odds on a season long future. Instead, I will wager a smaller amount on an underdog that I think has a chance to surprise some people, and perhaps has an easier schedule that some might not look into enough. For me, that team is the Purdue Boilermakers.

Purdue is sitting at a nice and crisp 25/1 at DraftKings, which I think is a little crazy. The Big Ten West is a toss up to me, with Wisconsin being the clear-cut favorite on the odds board at +1400. I don’t believe that is necessarily true, and think it’s a bit more wide open than that. The Badgers return just eight starters, and still have Graham Mertz at QB, so are we really convinced they are that much better? Purdue had one of their best seasons since 2003 last year with a 9-4 record, and they certainly could improve on that. They have a very favorable schedule that sees the Boilermakers miss several tough opponents, including Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan. They get Penn State in the season opener, which will be played at Purdue, and is a very winnable game considering how poorly the Nittany Lions did down the stretch last season. QB Aiden O’Connell returns this year, and he proved himself in 2021 to be one of the best in the conference with 28 TD’s and over 3,700 yards passing. They’ll need a better rushing attack in 2022, but the offense should be in good shape with O’Connell at the helm.

The defense was great last year for the Boilermakers, holding opponents to just 22.4 points per game and 5.5 yards per play. Ron English is the new defensive coordinator in town, and his inherited unit was one of the better ones in the conference. Even with several pieces missing from last years squad, this is a team that is within reach of the Big Ten West title, and thus a shot at being a conference champion.

No, you shouldn’t place a ton of money on this, but it’s great value for a team that is improving and has a great returning QB. It’s worth a sprinkle instead of laying monster odds.
