College Football Win Totals: Virginia Division-I Programs

Which Virginia based team has the most value?

College football win totals for the 2022 season have arrived! This means that we can now bet the over/under on how many wins a certain program will have next year, which is always a fun bet to make. Today we're taking a look at the Division-I programs in the state of Virginia to find out what might be the best bet. It will be interesting to see where their win totals sit and examine why they might go over or under.

We have already looked at the Akron ZipsVanderbilt Commodores, Illinois and Michigan schools, and we'll continue to look at different schools and states to see where the value lies in the win total projections.

Liberty Flames, C-USA - O/U 6.5

It’s hard to get better when you lose a talent like QB Malik Willis to the NFL, but the good news for the Flames is that they were still young overall last year. They added depth this offseason via recruiting and the transfer portal, and while they will be without their star QB next season, still have one of the most talented rosters in Conference USA. Charlie Brewer looks to be the starting QB, and while he is no Willis in terms of his athletic abilities, he’s a veteran game manager who’ll get the ball in everyone’s hands and keep the offense going. They also have redshirt freshman Kaiden Salter available, who could be a star in the making, but they most likely go with the safe option so early on. TJ Green was the leading RB last season with 477 yards and four scores, averaging over six yards per carry. He'll return to pair with Shedro Lewis and Hawaii transfer Dae Dae Hunter. The receiving corps should improve the most, with Demario Douglas and CJ Daniels back, and CJ Yarbrough as well after taking a season off.

Liberty may not have won 10 games like they did in 2020 last season, but they still had a very solid eight wins and a great team. I think it’ll take something totally disastrous for Liberty to not make a fourth straight bowl game with the talent they have on their roster relative to what they will face, which is a pretty balanced schedule over all.

Pick: Over 6.5

Old Dominion Monarchs, Sun Belt - O/U 4.5

This is going to be one of the more unpredictable teams of next season, because while they have a much better team this season than we are used to, their schedule is also much harder than they have had over the last few seasons. Last year, the Monarchs were able to get past a 1-6 start to their season because the schedule eased up, and they had four home games in their last six outings. This year, they have three road games in the last five, with dates against Appalachian State and Georgia State that will be massive challenges for this team. Still, it's a program that is headed in the right direction. They have a good young head coach in Ricky Rahne who knows how to get an offense going, and after years of building up recruiting talent, they finally have a team that should be competitive.

They are on a run of four straight losing seasons, but that could all change this year. Hayden Wolff is a star in the making at QB for the Monarchs, and their offense should be legit. The sophomore hit 63% of his passes for close to 2,000 yards and ten touchdowns last season, while Ali Jennings averaged over 17 yards per catch with five scores as the No. 1 wide receiver, and Zack Kuntz was a First Team All-Conference USA performer with a team-high 73 catches for 692 yards and five touchdowns. With a year of experience under their belts, this has the makings of one of the best offenses in the conference.

If they can pull out some of their close games, this team should get to five wins, with the potential for six if they really play well. This is a very unpredictable team, as we have seen over the years, so I probably wouldn't bet it. But if I had to...

Pick: Over 4.5

Virginia Cavaliers, ACC - O/U 7.5

With Virginia, you get a team that will have as much excitement and anticipation around them as any team in the state, or even the country for that matter. QB Brennan Armstrong has shown that he is one of the best in all of college football, and he has one of the 10 best groups of pass-catchers in the country around him that is sure to set off offensive fireworks. However, that comes with a cost this season. They have a first-year head coach, and with that, comes a whole new offense to learn and adapt to. Not only that, but they have some very tough road games this season, and a lot of tough opponents late in the season.

Virginia has four straight home games against good opponents from Oct. 29 to Nov. 19 including the top three teams in the Coastal Division. The defense will be challenged a lot this season, and with how tough the opposition will be, they had better learn this new offense fast if they want to get to eight wins. There are a few coin flip games in here that could go either way, but even if they win one or two, I see this landing at around 7 wins on the season.

Pick: Under 7.5

Virginia Tech Hokies, ACC - O/U 6.5

This is a very challenging line to pick an over or an under for, but since I have the Hokies sitting at seven wins in my projections for them, I will take the over. This is probably the best-case scenario for Brent Pry in his first season with the team, after it has undergone some serious changes after the recent coaching change. The schedule actually plays out pretty well for Virginia Tech this season, which is great news for a team that has undergone as much turnover as they have.

This is still a very talented roster that actually is in better overall shape than their counterpart Virginia. The two teams will face each other to end the season next year, and I feel like they will have about six wins at that point. What an incredible sweat it will be for this bet to come down to the last game against Armstrong and the Cavaliers.

I like the Hokies to get the job done there.

Pick: Over 6.5
