College Football Win Totals: Can Akron Win Three Games This Season?

The Zips have won three games over the last three years

Believe it or not, winning three games this season and going over their current win total projection would be a monumental accomplishment for the Akron Zips, a team that is very unfamiliar with winning as of late. The Zips are just 3-27 over the last three years, so winning a total of three games in one season is almost unthinkable for this program. However, there is reason to be optimistic that it isn't impossible, and that brighter days are on the horizon. With a win total set at 2.5, and with the under being juiced at a massive -160 number right now, I see some value in the over at plus money.

Don't get me wrong, this is still going to be a very bad football team in 2022, and they have a ton of work to do before they get to be in contention in the MAC. They averaged just 20.3 points a game and allowed 37.0 per game in league games last year, which is legitimately terrible. However, they have a new man at the helm that has begun his journey in trying to change all of that. The hire of former Mississippi State and Fordham head coach Joe Moorhead should jumpstart a program that is dead in the water, and they should start to at least be competitive pretty quickly.

The transfer portal additions of quarterback Jeff Undercuffler, running back Cam Wiley, wide receivers Shocky Jacques-Louis and Alex Adams, and defenders Tim Terry, KJ Martin, Victor Jones and Curtis Harper, should immediately make an impact for a team that was completely devoid of impact players over the last few seasons. Plus, linebacker Bubba Arslanian returns after missing eight games last year. All of these additions on defense will be much welcomed after the unit allowed nearly 250 yards a game on the ground last season.

Overall, it definitely is possible they fail to reach three wins, and that's why it is juiced at -160. However, I think with the additions that they have made, and with finally having a head coach that has experience at a major program, getting there isn't as unlikely as the books think it is. I'll roll the dice here and bank on improvement.

Pick: OVER 2.5
