With Steph Curry still out, Steve Kerr has made a concerted effort to get Thompson more involved early in games. Over his last three starts, Thompson has averaged 11.3 points in the first quarter and has notably attempted 4.7 threes in the opening period. He’s also played an average of 10.3 minutes in the first quarter of those contests while taking 7.0 field goal attempts. We all know how Thompson can catch fire and based on his recent role, I think there’s a ton of upside in this spot. Atlanta has allowed 29.6 first quarter points per game this season (9th-most) as well.
Doncic leads the NBA in first quarter scoring and has averaged an insane 14.6 points per game in the first quarter over his last five games. Dallas’ superstar is the only player in the NBA to play all 12 first quarter minutes in every single game he’s played this season and that’s a major reason why betting over 11.5 points isn’t farfetched, along with his overall stardom and volume. Houston has allowed 29.9 first quarter points per contest (8th-most in NBA) and have been one of the league’s worst defenses from an efficiency perspective all year long. Doncic carved them up easily for 35 points on Thursday after dropping 50 on them on December 23, so it’s clear that Houston won’t have a defensive answer for him.
Over his last five starts, Harden has averaged 3.8 assists in the first quarter and with Tyrese Maxey back, I see him with even more upside to record dimes. Harden’s role as Philadelphia’s main facilitator will not change and he’s clearly bought into that philosophy. In Harden’s last nine games, he’s recorded 13-plus full-game assists five different times, including a high of 21, so there’s a ton of upside for him as he’s shown repeatedly.
