The Rockets were the best team in the MAC all season long, so they have to be very disappointed that they dropped the title game to Miami (OH) 23-14 in their last contest. They simply couldn't solve the very good defense of the Redhawks and struggled to get anything going on offense, which was so good throughout the year. They will have a chance here to end their season on a high note by defeating Wyoming, but that will also be a tough task.
Toledo's offense has been one of the best in the country this season, but they certainly didn't show it in their last game. They are ranked 18th in yards per play, gaining 6.4 every time they snap the ball, showing their explosiveness. They have done most of their damage on the ground, where star RB Peny Boone has ripped off 1,400 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, just bulldozing over everyone. Their offensive line is elite, which has helped that rushing game shine, and they also are only allowing 0.9 sacks per game on QB Dequan Finn.
Defensively, they have been just as good as the offense, one of the stronger units in college football. They are ranked 20th in yards per play allowed on defense, letting up 4.8 per snap. This unit has been particularly strong at stopping opponent's air attacks, where they are allowing just 182.9 passing yards per game. They held their own in that game against Miami (OH), but their offense couldn't match.
Wyoming is known as the school that Josh Allen went to, but other than that, no one pays attention to what they are doing besides fans of the team and alumni. The Cowboys capped off their 8-4 year with a huge blowout 42-6 victory over Nevada, where they looked unstoppable. They scored 42 points in each of their last two games, in fact, so they have been hot on that side of the ball. When you look at some of their stats, you might wonder why they are even here, but you also have to remember they play in a more difficult conference than Toledo.
Offensively, they are ranked in the bottom half of the FBS in yards per play and generating 5.3 every time they snap the ball. For a school known for their past QB, they were not very good through the air this season. QB Andrew Peasley only threw for 1,823 yards, but he did throw for 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions. That's just 167.3 yards per game, which is ranked 120th in the nation. We'll see if they can throw on Toledo's 15th-ranked passing defense, and just how much strength of schedule matters.
On defense, the Cowboys have been much better. They are ranked 37th in the country in yards per play, allowing just 5.0 each opponent snap. They are ranked 51st in both passing and rushing yards allowed per game, so they haven't been stronger against one or the other. Wyoming has also faced much better competition than the Rockets, making it more impressive they are ranked this high.
My Pick: Lean Wyoming -2 (-112, BetRivers)
If the Rockets had trouble with the Redhawks' defense, Wyoming's will give them nightmares. I think the edge they have in the competition they have faced will be the difference here, and even though I haven't bet this one yet, I would lean the Cowboys here to get the win and cover.
