Ole Miss vs. Penn State: Live Odds

Ole Miss Rebels Outlook

The Rebels capped off their 10-2 season with a low-scoring 17-7 victory over Mississippi State on the road. The spread for the game was -10 for Ole Miss, and it pushed, which is indicative of how the season has gone for them with a 6-4-2 ATS record in 2023. This is a team that seems to do well against most competition, but couldn't seem to step up against the best. They beat teams like LSU, Arkansas and Texas A&M, but lost to both Georgia and Alabama by more than 10 points.

The offense has been a very good unit this season, ranking 24th in yards per play, averaging 6.3 yards every time they snap the ball. Their explosive play has mostly come through the air, led by QB Jaxson Dart, who finished with 2,985 yards and 20 touchdowns. They also ranked 24th in the nation in first downs gained per game, managing 22.9 per contest. No matter how you look at it, this is a top 25 unit in the FBS.

Defensively, Ole Miss was better than expected, ranking 44th in yards per play allowed. They got ripped by a few teams like Georgia putting up a crooked number on them, but they mostly have been pretty solid. Perhaps their strongest aspect has been getting to the QB, where they rank 18th in the country in sacks per game with 2.8.

Penn State Nittany Lions Outlook

Another year, another season coming up just short of making the CFP for the Nittany Lions. They can never seem to win that big game that would propel them into a chance to win a championship. Head coach James Franklin could be on the hot seat because he can't get them over the hump, despite the immense amount of talent. They finished up their season with a blowout 42-0 victory over the corpse of Michigan State.

Offensively, it has been somewhat of a struggle for Penn State. They rank just 77th in the nation in yards per play, getting only 5.4 yards when they snap the football on average. QB Drew Allar threw for 23 touchdowns to just a single interception but only threw for 2,336 yards. That's a low 204.3 passing yards per game, which is good for 93rd in the country. Their lack of explosiveness was evident in their 24-15 loss to Michigan, which pretty much ended their hopes of making the CFP.

The Nittany Lions owned the best defense in college football in 2023, ranking No. 1 in yards per play allowed. This was a dominant unit all year, and they ranked inside the top 10 in almost every single defensive statistic you could think of. They were also the best team in the nation at getting to the QB, averaging 4 sacks per game, and No. 1 in preventing first downs to their opponents.
