Surprising NHL Value Play for Vezina Trophy

We are right in the middle of the 2023 NHL season, and with the All-Star break coming up before we know it, there will be plenty of people looking to enter the futures market at the halfway point. There is almost always value on the board, it's just about finding where that value lies and getting the best number possible on a team or player that can improve on that number.

Right now, you can get the goaltender on one of the NHL's best teams at 25/1 odds to win the Vezina trophy. The Carolina Hurricanes will finish this season as one of the top teams in the league this year, and you can count on them to want to make some noise in the postseason as well. One of the reasons why the Hurricanes have been as good as they have been, is the emergence of a young rookie goaltender named Pyotr Kochetkov.

He's been incredible this season, and him being a rookie is even more impressive with what he has been able to accomplish. Kochetkov has a 10-4-4 record in net, with a fantastic 2.30 GA/G and .914 SV%. Those numbers rank 6th and 16th in the NHL, respectively, but there is every reason to believe that those stats will get even better as the year goes along.

For starters, he's playing with a defense in front of him that is one of the best units in the entire league. The Hurricanes defense allows just 26.0 shots per game on net, which is one of the lowest numbers in the NHL. The fewer shots allowed to be taken, the fewer chances you have to score goals on the goaltender. It's just that simple. Besides his great numbers, there is another stat that is really important when it comes to Vezina trophy voting that needs to be taken into account here. Shutouts continue to be important to note, and he is currently second in the NHL with three of them so far in 2022-23.

This is probably the best number you are going to get with him as well right now. He's lost his last four games, and has given up at least four goals in all four of those games. That's a cold streak that presents us with value on the number now. I don't expect that to continue going forward, and I think he bounces back. Two of those games were against the Devils and Rangers, both teams with excellent offenses.

I think +2500 is excellent value for a player that was so good to start the year, and has just had a rough stretch of games. Sprinkle a little bit on him at this number.
