We have seen every team this season go on runs and losing streaks, and that has happened already for the Hurricanes. This is a very talented and deep team that is great just about everywhere you look. Their offense is scoring 3.1 goals per game, while getting a massive 34.9 shots on goal each night out. They also only allow opposing teams to take about 26.4 shots on their net per game, so they are seriously outplaying just about everyone they face on the ice. The puck possession numbers can really tell a story about how good a team really is, and Carolina is one of the best in the league with that differential.

The goaltending itself also must be looked at as a serious reason why Carolina can compete for the trophy. They are allowing just 2.6 goals per game, one of the lowest numbers in the NHL. Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov has been unbelievable in net, with a 2.1 GA/G and a remarkable .924 SV%. Those numbers are probably unsustainable throughout the entire season, but the fact that he has them up to this point should tell you just how good this guy has been guarding their net. Meanwhile, Andrei Svechnikov has been on a roll and is their primary scorer, with 19 goals this season.

Overall, I really like how good they are defensively. That is a key part to being a Stanley Cup-winning squad, and we have already seen in the past that teams like Edmonton don't make it deep in the postseason because of their poor goaltending and defense. The best teams play great defense, and Carolina has that. Now they just need Boston to slip up just a bit, and we could cash a +450 ticket.
