English Premier League
The NHL is getting close to the center point of the season, and now is the time to take everything we have seen so far and try to make some valuable bets based off of that Information. There's been so many ups and downs for almost every team this year, but there are just a few that seem to have a real chance to clinch the NHL's best record. There is one team that has caught my eye at the current number, so let's take a look and examine why a smart futures bet might result in some big money being added to our account.
The Hurricanes are my favorite team right now at +450 at DraftKings to win the Presidents Trophy. They are sitting behind Boston in the standings, with the Bruins -210 to win. I will never lay odds that are above -135, and for futures, I won't bet anything that isn't giving me some value to place the bet. Could the Bruins win it? Absolutely. But -210 isn't valuable at all, and the Hurricanes have plenty of time and opportunity to catch up with them and win it.
Carolina is currently just six points behind the Bruins for the league lead. That's three wins, which is very doable. We have seen every team this season go on runs and losing streaks, and that has happened already for the Hurricanes. They actually started out the season pretty slow, barely getting over .500 through the first 10-15 games. Since then, they have absolutely exploded to a 25-7-6 record. This is a very talented and deep team that is great just about everywhere you look. Their offense is scoring 3.1 goals per game, while getting a massive 34.9 shots on goal each night out. They also only allow opposing teams to take about 26.4 shots on their net per game, so they are seriously outplaying just about everyone they face on the ice. The puck possession numbers can really tell a story about how good a team really is, and Carolina is one of the best in the league with that differential.
The goaltending itself also must be looked at as a serious reason why Carolina can compete for the trophy. They are allowing just 2.6 goals per game, one of the lowest numbers in the NHL. Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov has been unbelievable in net, with a 2.1 GA/G and a remarkable .924 SV%. Those numbers are probably unsustainable throughout the entire season, but the fact that he has them up to this point should tell you just how good this guy has been guarding their net. Meanwhile, Andrei Svechnikov has been on a roll and is their primary scorer, with 19 goals this season.
Overall, I really like how good they are defensively. That is a key part to being a Stanley Cup-winning squad, and we have already seen in the past that teams like Edmonton don't make it deep in the postseason because of their poor goaltending and defense. The best teams play great defense, and Carolina has that. Now they just need Boston to slip up just a bit, and we could cash a +450 ticket. It's certainly worth a sprinkle; new DraftKings users could even bet this for free by using the offer below!
