NHL Presidents' Trophy: Are Bruins A Lock?

Second place is getting 40/1 odds, so you might want to consider this team

NHL President's Trophy Odds

There has been a clear favorite for this award from start to finish this NHL season, and that is the Boston Bruins, who have already amassed 107 points and counting. Right now, they are the overwhelming favorites to take it home at -10000. Usually, I would never recommend betting into a market like this, but it's one that I think isn't a total lock quite yet. There is some value here if you look at the rest of the schedule.

Carolina Hurricanes +4000 (DraftKings) To Win Presidents' Trophy

Now, before you write this off instantly as crazy, you should know that this isn't a bet that you should be placing a lot of money on. In fact, nothing more than some beer money could ever be recommended here, but I think it could be worth a case.

Right now, the Hurricanes are 11 points behind the Bruins for second place right now in the current standings, which is a pretty sizable lead. That's why Boston is listed as almost a lock to win the award; however, I don't think they're guaranteed to win. Boston has been treading water a little bit as of late. They just lost two games back-to-back against some really bad opponents such as the Red Wings and Blackhawks, and also fell to the Oilers in their last five as well. Hockey is all about momentum and who gets it at the right time. Boston definitely doesn't have it right now, and after starting the season looking unbeatable, they have begun to show signs of vulnerability.

It might not let up soon either. The Bruins have a bunch of formidable foes that they will be facing off against in their last month of the season, including these Hurricanes in what could be a massive contest. They also have to take on teams like the Wild, Senators, Lightning, Penguins, Maple Leafs, Devils, and Capitals before it's over. All of those teams are going to be pushing hard to secure the best playoff position possible for themselves, so you know you are going to get their best efforts. I would also be a bit concerned about goalie Linus Ullmark, who has looked mortal recently in net. Now, he still has a ridiculous 1.97 GAA and .935 SV%, but those numbers could possibly be so insane that he is due for regression, which we have seen a bit as of late.

The Hurricanes are playing some great hockey right now, and they aren't entirely out of reach of this award. They are facing some tough opponents to be sure over the coming stretch, but this number at 40/1 is just a little crazy to me. They are 11 points back, but they can make up that in no time if they go on a little bit of a run here to end the season. Boston needs to keep their inconsistencies growing for this to have a pulse, but I don't think that is impossible.
