Hammer The Futures Markets For This NHL Team

An undervalued number presents a great buy-in spot

As we get closer to the midway point of the 2023 NHL season, this is a good time to look at some teams for some value in making futures bets. One team that certainly has caught my attention is the Calgary Flames, a team that I think has massively disappointed in the wins column to begin the season. Coming into the year, the Flames were viewed as one of the top contenders in the Western Conference, having made the playoffs last year. They entered the year with super-talented lineup that featured one of the best goaltenders in the NHL in Jacob Markstrom. Unfortunately, even with all that talent and playoff experience, Calgary has flamed out as to this point in the season.

Calgary Flames On The Comeback Trail

As of this writing, the Flames are 15-12-6 on the year with 36 points. However, there are many signs that point to them having a positive outlook moving forward. First off, their offense is actually legitimate, even if they aren't putting up the number of goals that they should. Calgary gets 34.2 shots on goal each night, well above NHL average, and they only allow 28.2 shots per game. Right there tells you that they are pretty dominant in puck possession, which is a huge factor towards being successful. Goaltending is allowing 3.03 goals per game, which is about average. Their penalty kill has been outstanding, stopping 81.1% of opponents' power plays. Where they need to get better is the goal-scoring department. They score just 3.09 goals per game, which is low for getting 34 shots on net per night. They also have been lackluster on their own power play attempts, scoring on just 19.6% of them.

While they have struggled to begin the year, that's okay because now they present us with a bunch of value in multiple areas. First off, Calgary is now 18/1 to win the Stanley Cup in 2023. If you want to take a shot on a very talented team to win it all at a great price, you should consider putting a little down on the Flames. However, some real value lies in the conference and divison numbers. Somehow, the Colorado Avalanche are still the favorites in the West at +250. I don't think that is correct at all. Colorado has a good team, but they have really looked different from the team that won the cup last season. Calgary is +750 at some books just come out of the West. That's a great number if you ask me that holds a ton of value. To win the Pacific Division is at around +320, which i also think holds some value. Vegas is the frontrunner, and they are good, but the Flames certainly can catch up if they start playing to their full potential.

Put a little down on these bets and we'll see if we can't make a good profit here.
