Unbelievable how we lost yesterday on the Kings against these same Hurricanes. We had L.A. at +180 and were up 4-1 in the third period, all for the Kings to give up three straight goals and lose in OT. We move. Today we have the Hurricanes traveling the day after that comeback to take on the Buffalo Sabres.
I can't make heads or tails of the Sabres this season. They have won four of their last five games, but I'm not totally sold on them due to how many shots and goals they allow; Buffalo is giving up 3.35 goals per game and 32.6 shots.
The Hurricanes are on a six-game winning streak, and I thought for sure that Los Angeles was going to end that streak at five. Alas, now the 'Canes get Buffalo. There is no doubt Carolina is impressive, scoring 3.30 goals per game and giving up just 2.64 on average. It is also outshooting opponents 35.0 to 26.3, a significant margin.
MY PICK: Hurricanes -1.5. I can't eat the juice here with the Hurricanes, even though I think they will win. Instead, I'll take a shot at them winning by two. You'll get good plus-money, so you don't have to risk as much on this one with Carolina on short rest. Buffalo is a team that I like to back in certain spots, but this isn't one of them.
If you're not playing BetMGM's NHL OGP Insurance promo yet, you're leaving money on the table. Opt in to the promo and place a four-leg (minimum) NHL one-game parlay; if your OGP loses by one leg, you'll get your stake back in a free bet up to $25 -- and you can take advantage of this promo once every day there's an NHL game!
Here is my play for today, using the strategy of taking both teams to go under their maximum goal total in the 1st period (gimmie legs), taking the favorite at their maximum spread, and adding the most likely goal scorer; you can apply this strategy to any game, any night:
Thompson Anytime Goal
Sabres Under 2.5 1P
Hurricanes Under 3.5 1P
Hurricanes +2.5
(OGP odds: +210)

This should be a great game between two very good hockey teams when the Boston Bruins travel to Canada to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs. Boston has been unquestionably the best team in the NHL this season, and there are many reasons for that. The Bruins score a whopping 3.70 goals per game and give up just a minuscule 2.12, which is by far the lowest average in the league. They are outshooting opponents 33.5 to 29.2, so dominating the ice has been second nature to them this season. This is a great team that will be a true contender for a championship.
Toronto is another team that should be a serious contender, if not for all the memories we have of them choking in the playoffs. Still, the Leafs are very good. They score 3.39 goals per game and allow just 2.63, while outshooting their opposition 31.8 to 28.7 on average. You know they will want to win this game at home, so this should be a good one.
MY PICK: Maple Leafs +118. Give me the Leafs here at plus-money at home. You are not going to see that very often at all, unless they are facing a fantastic team like the Bruins. I think they have every chance to win this game, and I'll take the plus-money with a very good hockey team instead of laying juice with one.
