Red Wings at Islanders Prediction

Let's start things off today in the Big Apple, where the New York Islanders will be at home trying to defend their home ice against the visiting Detroit Red Wings. Honestly, I think both of these teams kinda stink, and I'm not a fan of either right now. The Islanders have lost five straight games and have looked like a disaster, while the Red Wings have won two straight. Detroit is scoring 3.06 goals per game and allowing 3.30 per game, so they have a negative goal differential. They also are getting outshot on average 29.7 to 30.7 per game. Overrated for sure, and a fraudulent record that will start to regress soon enough.

However, maybe not against the Islanders, who are also pretty bad. They are scoring just 2.88 goals per game, but are allowing only 2.80, so at least positive in that sense. They are still getting outshot on average 30.6 to 31.6, so no one here dominates puck possession. They do have home-ice advantage, but I'm not sure how much that really matters.

MY PICK: Red Wings +150. Both teams stink, so why do the Islanders deserve to be laying -180 against anyone? They have lost five straight games and look terrible. I'll take the value here with the Red Wings at plus-money.

BetMGM NHL OGP Insurance Play Of The Day

If you're not playing BetMGM's NHL OGP Insurance promo yet, you're leaving money on the table. Here is my play for today, using the strategy of taking both teams to go under their maximum goal total in the 1st period (gimmie legs), taking the favorite at their maximum spread, and adding the most likely goal scorer; you can apply this strategy to any game, any night:

Nelson Anytime Goal
Red Wings Under 2.5 1P
Islanders Under 3.5 1P
Islanders +2.5
(OGP odds: +165)

Senators at Maple Leafs Prediction

My second best bet of the night comes in Canada, where the Ottawa Senators are traveling to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs. I honestly think that the Senators are one of those "sleeper" teams that could sneak into the playoffs by the time the season ends. I really like what I see out of them, despite not getting the results they ultimately want. Ottawa scores just 2.85 goals per game, despite taking a very high average of 33.7 shots per game. I believe goals will start coming eventually, and when they do, this is a dangerous team. Their weakness is on the defensive side of the ice, where they allow 3.26 goals per game and 31.8 shots.

Toronto is unquestionably a great team, and what they have done so far proves that. They are scoring 3.39 goals per game and allowing just 2.59. They are outshooting their opponents 31.9 to 28.7 on average. They dominate the ice and have won four of their last five games.

MY PICK: Senators +175. This is just way too large of a number. Ottawa is way better than its record, in my opinion, and I think this is a team to watch down the stretch. At this price, I'll gladly take a shot with the Senators here. They are more likely to win than this indicates.
