Devils at Hurricanes Prediction

We begin in Carolina, where the Hurricanes will be defending their home ice against the visiting New Jersey Devils. The Devils have started to wake up from their slump, and have won three of their last five games. This is a very good team that is extremely dangerous. They score 3.40 goals per game and take 34.9 shots per game, making them one of the most lethal offenses in the NHL. The defense allows just 2.63 goals per game and just 27.3 shots against. Every team goes through a rough patch in the season, but the good teams break out of them. New Jersey is one of those teams.

Carolina, meanwhile, is in a tough stretch right now. They have lost three straight games coming into this one, with their last win being against this same Devils team in a 5-4 shootout. They are still one of the best teams in hockey without a doubt. The Hurricanes score 3.10 goals per game and take an incredible 35.9 shots per game. On defense, they allow only 2.65 goals per game and 26.2 shots against per contest.

MY PICK: Devils +126 ML. I just think this is a nice value play, and that neither team is really that much better than the other. If they are giving me plus-money with the Devils, I'll certainly take it with one of the better teams in the league.

Panthers vs. Avalanche Prediction

For our last pick of the day, let's head out to Colorado, where the Avalanche will be at home to take on the Florida Panthers. Two of the most disappointing teams in hockey will battle it out here to see who is less disappointing. Florida has really taken a massive step back since last season when it won the Presidents Trophy. The Panthers are just 18-19-4, and things aren't getting better. They are scoring 3.22 goals per game and allowing 3.42 goals per game, which is clearly not ideal. In terms of shots, they are outshooting their opponents 35.7 to 31.8. It's still amazing to me that they have been this good but can't win games.

The defending Stanley Cup champions have taken a step back as well. The Avalanche are just 20-15-3 this season, and it's easy to see why when you look at their numbers. They score just 2.87 goals per game, while allowing 2.84 per game. The offense has really suffered badly, but losing Nathan MacKinnon for an extended period this season is part of that. He's a great player that facilitates the offense, and without him, it's been a struggle.

MY PICK: Panthers +130. Honestly, I wouldn't blame you for fading this with how bad the Panthers have been. But, I just feel like they are so much better than their record indicates, and I'm getting plus-money.
