The 2022-23 NHL season is well underway, so it’s a good time to update the league’s power rankings.
NHL odds had the injury-ridden Colorado Avalanche (+700) as favorites to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, but they’ve now fallen to second place behind the Boston Bruins (+550). The Carolina Hurricanes (+750), Vegas Golden Knights (+800), and Toronto Maple Leafs (+1000) round out the top five favorites.
NHL Power Rankings 2022-23
1. Boston Bruins
The Bruins finished 10th overall in 2021-22, and all signs pointed to them having a rough start this season. It didn’t take long for them to prove their detractors wrong, and as of Jan. 18, they’re very comfortably leading the league with a record of 35-5-4.
Not too shabby at all.
Right winger David Pastrnak is having himself a hot season, having recorded 35 goals, 28 assists, 63 points, and 217 shots. Patrice Bergeron (35 points, 151 shots), Brad Marchand (41 points, 97 shots), and Taylor Hall (30 points, 109 shots) aren’t too far behind him, either.
The 2022-23 Bruins are a team to watch.
2. Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs are on fire right now. With a record of 27-11-7 (as of Jan. 18), Toronto is second in the Atlantic division, only behind the Boston Bruins. The Leafs finished fourth overall in 2021-22, and if they keep up the same intensity, they will be able to beat that this season.
Right winger Mitch Marner recently came off a 23-game point streak and just set a franchise record with a 19-game home point streak, with his stats for the season sitting at 16 goals, 38 assists, 54 points, and 107 shots. Star center Auston Matthews is also having a great year, with 22 goals, 27 assists, 49 points, and 181 shots.
Can the Maple Leafs secure another playoff berth this season? Almost certainly.
