Upset Alert: Beware These NFL Underdogs in Week 3

Dan Karpuc: Panthers +130 vs. Saints
With Matt Rhule seemingly on the hot seat after an 0-2 start, Carolina is in desperate need of a win, which is something they came very close to pulling off in both Weeks 1 and 2. In Week 1, they fell to the Browns, 26-24. In Week 2, they lost to the Giants, 19-16. Now playing against Jameis Winston and his fractured spine, this should be an opportunity for the Panthers to notch a win. “Bad Jameis” showed up against the Buccaneers on Sunday, as he was sacked six times and picked off three times in a 10-point loss. With Alvin Kamara questionable for this game and not at 100% even if he suits up, it’s clear that Michael Thomas and Chris Olave will be Winston’s top targets, but this Panthers defense has been awesome so far, allowing just 148 passing yards in Week 1 and 162 in Week 2. I can see this being a low-scoring affair, but I’ll give the slight edge to Carolina.

Matt Horner: Panthers +130 vs. Saints

No one wants to back the Panthers after those two gross losses to Cleveland and New York, but they weren't as bad as some might think. They are 0-2 SU and 0-2 ATS to start the year, even though both losses were by a total of five points, and that means this is a great spot for them to start to even that out against a Saints team that isn't much better than they are. In fact, Carolina is ranked higher in offensive, defensive and special teams DVOA through two games. At home against a division rival with a hurt QB, Carolina can get the job done. I'll take the Panthers to win outright.

Lucy Burdge: Patriots +140 vs. Ravens
The Ravens were just upset by the Dolphins, who made a wild comeback in the fourth quarter, and I like the Patriots to hand Baltimore another loss this weekend. The Patriots gained a bit of confidence last week with their win over the Steelers to avoid going 0-2, so I think they can get another win this week as the underdog, especially in their home opener.

Brad Pinkerton: Jets +185 vs. Bengals

The Jets are flying high after that comeback win against the Browns in Week 2, while the Bengals can't get much lower after starting the season 0-2. Check that: They can get much lower if Cincinnati also loses to the Jets on Sunday. That's a real possibility if the Bengals O-line can't protect Joe Burrow, who has been sacked a league-high 13 times already. The sharps are on New York as well: As of early Wednesday, the Jets had gotten just 43% of the tickets on the moneyline but a whopping 74% of the money for a 31% pro-money advantage, the highest number at that point in the week. The Bengals are on upset alert (again).
