The much scrutinized former #1 pick beat out Taysom Hill for the starting quarterback job this offseason after legendary QB Drew Brees retired from the game after last season. Many believed that either one of these two QB's would be a huge downgrade from Brees, and that the Saints would not be a contender this season in a division with Tom Brady and the defending champion Buccaneers.
This is simply not true. The Saints can win, a lot, and I think they will. This roster as it is currently constructed has the ability to win double-digit contests, as it is supremely talented around Winston and on the defensive side of the ball. While Winston does have his issues, he is also an explosive offensive player that can put up yards and TDs in a hurry. He also can throw the deep ball, something Brees lacked in his older age with deteriorating arm strength.
If he can cut down on his famous turnovers while still maintaining a high level of play, I see no reason the Saints can't win at least 10 games and maybe even push the Buccaneers to their limits.
Most of the New Orleans Saints’ fortunes depend largely on how well Winston can succeed Brees. If Winston cuts down on the 30 interceptions he threw in 2019, which is highly probable due to how hard it is to actually throw that many, the Saints can surprise people.
Their roster is championship-ready, and they proved that by routing Green Bay in Week 1, as Winston threw five touchdowns and zero picks.
He was a scoring machine, and best of all, not a turnover one. He didn't have many yards, under 200 in fact, but he was effective. That's what New Orleans needs him to be in order to make this take become a reality.
The schedule isn't too bad for the Saints, and they already got past what was thought of as one of their toughest challenges in Green Bay. Now the focus will be on maintaining this level of play as the weeks go on, and I like New Orleans chances.
