New York Jets rookie QB Zach Wilson got off to a slow start against Carolina in Week 1 and a disastrous start against the New England Patriots in Week 2. Disastrous may be an understatement, and Wilson is the wild card in this game that will determine how it goes. If he’s off yet again, the Jets don't have a chance. They couldn’t recover from his horrific two interceptions on his first two pass attempts against the Patriots last week, and he got even worse after that. Wilson had four picks on the day.
After two weeks of letting Wilson run wild and seeing what the QB can do, I think New York is going to simplify the game plan against Denver. That means they’re going to play a very modest and old-school form of football, relying more heavily on their rushing attack than passing. They will work with Wilson on making easy passes instead of looking for something risky down the field and going bombs away. The idea is to have him settle into more of a game manager type of role for now, the way Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones was last week. The focus will be on him not turning the ball over.
If Wilson can manage the game and not turn the ball over, rely on his rushing attack, and the offensive line can play like it did last week, that helps the Jets big time at covering this huge number. +10.5 is a lot of points to give any team. New York's defense, despite its many issues, shouldn’t get blown out by the Broncos. Denver just isn't that type of offense. The Jet's defense is good enough to keep Wilson and the offense in the game and give them a chance to cover this large spread
If Wilson settles down, he can keep the Jets in the game a lot longer than he did the first two weeks. Turnovers are so important in this game, and if he limits them, I think it will be close. That might not be enough for the Jets to get their first win of the season, but it should be enough for them to at least cover this absolutely massive spread.
