Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants Preview

With the Philadelphia Eagles starting to make their move in the playoff race, they hit the road in Week 12 to face the New York Giants in an NFC East rivalry game. The Eagles have dominated this rivalry for much of the past decade, winning eight in a row against the G-Men until their visit to MetLife Stadium last season. However, the Eagles have still won six of their last eight road games against the Giants. This week, Philadelphia is a three-point road favorite with the over/under for the game set at 46.5 points.

Philadelphia Eagles Preview

A month ago, it looked like the season was getting away from the Eagles. But Philadelphia has turned the tables with three wins in four games. Granted, that only has the Eagles at 5-6 on the season. But things are looking up after back-to-back wins over the Broncos and Saints, putting Philly just half a game out of playoff spot. The team’s remaining schedule includes two games with the Giants, two with Washington, and one against the Jets, so things are well set up for the Eagles to make a serious playoff push if they can build on their current momentum.

It’s been a swift turnaround for the Philadelphia offense, as the Eagles are averaging 34.5 points per game over their last four games. The difference is that the Eagles have been able to run the ball effectively, gaining over 200 yards in back-to-back games. While Jalen Hurts remains the team’s leading rusher by a wide margin, they are no longer reliant on him. Jordan Howard has joined the lineup while Miles Sanders returned from an injury with 94 rushing yards on 16 carries against the Saints last week. Both Sanders and Howard are averaging at least five yards per carry this season. With Hurts also a threat with his legs, the Eagles have a potent rushing attack despite averaging less than 200 passing yards per game.

Being able to run the ball is also a big help to the Philly defense, which hasn’t necessarily been reliable on a week-to-week basis. Outside of a few games against some of the weaker teams in the league, the Eagles have struggled to consistently keep opposing offenses under wraps. However, takeaways have helped to fuel some of the team’s recent success, including back-to-back games with a defensive touchdown. The problem is that trend isn’t necessarily easy to continue. Plus, the Eagles only have 18 sacks in 11 games, struggling to put consistent pressure on quarterbacks outside of Javon Hargrave.

New York Giants Preview

The Giants have to bounce back after a short week after losing 30-10 in Tampa on Monday night. If there’s a silver lining it’s that the Giants have still won two of their last four games and nearly knocked off the Chiefs during that stretch as well. While there have been some rough moments for Joe Judge’s team, three of New York’s seven losses have come by a field goal or less. Nevertheless, time is running out for the Giants to make any kind of playoff push, although they have a schedule that could allow that if they get going right now.

New York’s problem is the offense just isn’t moving the ball behind Daniel Jones. While injuries have hindered them at times this season, that doesn’t necessarily excuse Jones for his subpar play and his inability to get the ball down the field. Through 10 games, he has just nine touchdown passes but seven interceptions. He’s also averaged below six yards per pass in three of his last five games, so things aren’t getting any better. Even with Saquon Barkley back from injury, he was a non-factor with just 12 touches in Monday’s loss to the Buccaneers.

Defensively, the Giants have occasionally shown some promise. While they couldn’t do enough to keep Tom Brady and the Bucs in check on Monday, the Giants gave up 20 points or less in each of their three previous games. However, injuries to players like Logan Ryan, Jabrill Peppers, and Blake Martinez have held the Giants back on that side of the ball. While they can hold their own at times, the Giants aren’t creating enough negative players or forcing enough takeaways to make up for an offense that’s been so unreliable this year.

Eagles vs. Giants Prediction

While the Eagles have been surprisingly good on the road this year, the equation changes against a division rival. The Philadelphia defense is still a question mark while the offense can be too one-dimensional at times. That doesn’t make them a great pick as a road favorite, so it may not be such a bad idea to give the Giants the benefit of the doubt.
