Los Angeles Rams Preview
It’s a short week for the Rams, but they’ll likely be feeling good after Monday’s win over the Buccaneers. Back-to-back wins over Seattle and Tampa Bay have surely made a statement to the rest of the NFC that Los Angeles is a contender. Equally important, those wins have put the Rams into a tie with the Seahawks for first place in the NFC West at 7-3. Of course, there’s a lot of football left to be played in the NFC West. In fact, the Rams play four of their final six games against divisional foes, including two games with the upstart Cardinals.
While he can be rough around the edges at times, L.A. quarterback Jared Goff is playing some of his best football of the past two years. Without much help from his running game on Monday, Goff threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns. In fairness, he also threw two interceptions, giving him eight picks in 10 games this year. But it was also Goff’s second straight game with over 300 passing yards against a top-flight NFC opponent, which bodes well for him and the L.A. offense moving forward, especially if the Rams can get their rushing attack back on track.
Defensively, the Rams have to be pleased with where they sit right now. On Monday, they limited Tom Brady and the Bucs to just 251 total yards, picking off Brady twice despite registering just one sack. To date, the Rams have allowed the second-fewest points in the NFL and are averaging over three sacks per game. More importantly, they are relatively healthy on defense, which has helped them maintain a high level of play on that side of the ball.
San Francisco 49ers Preview
It’s now or never for the reigning NFC champs, who were nursing a three-game losing streak before a much-needed bye last week. The 49ers come out of their bye at 4-6, putting them last in the NFC West and two games out of a wild-card spot. To make matters worse, San Francisco has one game left against each of the teams ahead of them in the NFC West. If the 49ers have a late playoff push in them, they’ll have to do it the hard way.
As Jimmy Garoppolo continues to nurse his second high-ankle sprain of the season, Nick Mullens continues to serve as the San Francisco starting quarterback. Mullens isn’t flashy or good enough to be a regular starter, but he’s surely a capable backup. The problem for the 49ers is that injuries have ravaged their backfield and the rest of their offense. Right now, the 49ers can’t provide Mullens with enough help because their offensive line is hurting and unable to create enough of a rushing attack to take the heat off the quarterback.
Unfortunately for the 49ers, it’s been a similar story on defense, as one key player after another has been placed on IR or suffered a serious injury. The result is a defense that’s giving up close to 33 points per game in its last three games. The only silver lining is that San Francisco held the Rams to just 16 points when the teams met earlier this year. But replicating that kind of performance could be difficult.
Full Game Prediction
The 49ers are facing an uphill battle against the Rams this week. Keep in mind that Garoppolo played one of his best games of the season against the Rams in a 24-16 win in October. San Francisco was able to win the battle at the line of scrimmage in this game, which won’t be easy to do this time around.
