2022 USC Recap

2022 was a year of revelations for the Trojan fanbase, as during the offseason they had gotten the news that former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley was headed to SoCal to take over the reins at USC. With him came a ton of experience and a pedigree of winning, along with former Oklahoma QB Caleb Williams.

Right from the start, it was easy to see that the first season under Riley would be far better than what had been going on at the school for the last decade or so. The rejuvenation of the football program came quickly, and the Trojans finished the 2022 season with an 11-3 record and 8-1 in Pac-12 play. That earned them a trip to the Pac-12 Championship game against Utah, while also being ranked No. 4 in the nation.

Unfortunately, their 2022 season would come to a stifling halt with a loss in that game, which eliminated them from playoff contention. However, they would earn a trip to the Cotton Bowl Classic, but still ultimately lost to No. 16 Tulane.

2023 USC Odds & Outlook

Riley and Williams are back in 2023, and that means that there is likely another very productive season in store for the Trojans. Williams is coming off a Heisman Trophy, and USC seems to be back on track as one of the premier programs in college football. Right now over at DraftKings Sportsbook, they have the Trojans sitting at +1600 to win the National Championship in 2023. That's currently the fifth-best odds to win the whole thing, behind teams like Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, and Michigan.

While it won't be an easy schedule next year for USC, they should still win a lot of games in the Pac-12. Some key games include playing in South Bend at Notre Dame, taking on Utah in a rematch of the Pac-12 championship, traveling to Oregon to face Bo Nix and the Ducks, and a signature match against rival UCLA. Those games will be key to determining how the season will go for the Trojans. They have the talent to win all of them, but that will be extremely difficult to do.

2023 USC Prediction

I would wager that USC loses one or two of those games I listed above. I am not a huge fan of USC and wasn't pretty much all of last season, mostly due to how awful the defense was. They had the most takeaways in the Pac-12 and got really lucky with them quite a bit. I don't think that continues to happen, as turnovers are not something that usually transfers from season to season. The offense should be great led by Williams and Riley, but I am hesitant to back them to win anything more than a bunch of regular-season games.
