Last season was the best for Ohio State since losing to Alabama in the 2021 CFP Championship game. The Buckeyes actually finished second in the Big 10 East behind Michigan after losing to them in one of their final games of the season. However, they were still able to manage an 11-2 record on the year and an 8-1 record in the Big 10. It looked like they would miss the CFP after that loss to the Wolverines, but after No. 4 USC got blown out of the water by Utah in the Pac-12 Championship, they snuck in by taking that No. 4 spot.
They got matched up with the defending national champions and No. 1 seed Georgia Bulldogs in the Peach Bowl. Ohio State gave them all they could handle, and for a majority of the game, actually looked like they were going to win. However, a late surge by the defending champs put them in front 42-41, and a missed 50-yard field goal at the stroke of midnight on New Year's made sure the Buckeyes started 2023 out in pain.
Despite losing superstar QB C.J. Stroud to the NFL Draft, Ohio State is still one of the betting favorites to win the 2023 CFP Championship. They are currently listed at +650 on DraftKings Sportsbook, which is the third-highest odds of any team to win it all. That tells you that they are going to be a really good team in 2023, or at least, they are expected to be. We don't know yet who will take the reigns at QB for the team, my assumption would be junior Kyle McCord, who started one game two years ago and was named Freshman of the Week in a blowout win over Akron. He'll join an extremely talented offensive cast that includes two superstar WRs in Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka, as well as RB TreVeyon Henderson.
Looking at the schedule, they have a few games that could be tough on them. Notre Dame should offer them a real challenge in South Bend behind their new QB Sam Hartman. They also have their annual dates with Penn State and Michigan, which are usually always competitive. Outside of that, they should have a relatively easy schedule.
Once again, Ohio State should be right there in contention for a CFP spot when all is said and done. If McCord can continue the Buckeyes' streak of having superstar QBs, they should have no problems winning a ton of games with the insane amount of talent on this roster. Marvin Harrison Jr. will probably be the best player in the country, and he's a mortal lock to be a top-10 pick in 2024 for the NFL Draft.
The defense is the biggest question mark for Ohio State, as they got completely destroyed by Georgia and Michigan in their last few games of the season. They certainly need to sort that out and get better on that side of the football if they want to win a title, but overall, I'd be shocked if they aren't in the CFP.
