Southern Mississippi presented much more of a challenge to Miami than it should have, but in the end, the Hurricanes ended up with a 30-7 win. It's been a success overall to the start of Mario Cristobal's tenure as head coach of the once-great program as he tries to revive it to prominence just like he did with Oregon in his time there. He has a great QB prospect in Tyler Van Dyke, but he's built a run-centered offense, rushing over 40 times already in two games. This opens the passing game for his talented signal caller, who has thrown just one interception and 12 incompletions so far.
This will be his biggest challenge yet as he strolls into College Station to face the Aggies in a primetime road game. That type of pressure can get to you, but Van Dyke has the talent to perform well. This will be their first real challenge this season after playing two inferior opponents as tune-ups.
A trend to note: Mario Cristobal is 7-2 SU after allowing 75 or fewer rushing yards last game over his career.

What a terrible loss at home to Appalachian State in Week 2. Jimbo Fisher once again finds himself in the crosshairs of public scrutiny, and for good reason. Did you know that Fisher was 27-1 SU with Jameis Winston as his QB, and 90-36 without him? Current Aggies quarterback, Haynes King, went 13 of 20 for 97 yards and zero touchdowns against the Mountaineers. That isn't going to get it done. Their running game was shut down by an FCS defense, carrying 18 times for 83 yards and a touchdown. A 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the only scoring the Aggies were capable of producing with a roster full of four- and five-star talent.
I fully expect them to come out and play better against Miami after that horrible game, but it is a massive concern. The defense really needs to get it together. They have surrendered over 100 rushing yards to two non-Power 5 opponents to start the year, which is unacceptable. That forces the offense to do well, and if they don't, you wind up with results like you saw last week.
I will say this: Jimbo Fisher is 11-2 in non-conference games while coaching Texas A&M.

Texas A&M was dominated at the line of scrimmage by App State last weekend, surrendering 52 carries for 181 rushing yards and a touchdown. What did we talk about earlier about how Miami loves to run the football? Oh yes, they run it a lot, and successfully too. Teams that win the line of scrimmage often end up winning the game. Both of Miami's opponents have averaged 3.2 ypc or worse, and they have the upper hand against the Aggie defense in that category as well. Give me Miami +5.5 or on the moneyline at around +185.
