Last time out, Florida State hosted #22 Wake Forest and suffered a disappointing 31-21 defeat. The Seminoles jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead, but Wake Forest went on a 28-0 run between the first and third quarters to make it 28-7 midway through the third quarter. The Seminoles scored 14 unanswered points to make it a one possession game, but the Demon Deacons hit a field goal late to put the game on ice.
I'll say this, it does look like Florida State this season is making progress towards becoming the program they were a decade ago. They still have a ways to go, but they have been competitive, and they were even ranked last week at No. 23. It has been baby steps each year with this school, and it looks like they have reached the stage where they are walking and not crawling.
Defensively, the Seminoles allowed 405 total yards and did not force any Wake Forest turnovers, so they have work to do on that side of the ball, but the offense showed some grit.
Meanwhile, NC State visited #5 Clemson and left with a 30-20 loss. Their problem was that they couldn't get into the end zone and settled for far too many field goals, and that ultimately did them in against a top-5 team. You can't get in the red zone that many times and keep kicking the ball. Clemson led 30-13 late in the fourth quarter before giving up a consolation touchdown with under one minute left in the game.
QB Devin Leary went 28-for-47 for 245 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and added one touchdown on the ground. If I'm being honest, he's been really disappointing so far this season. Leary was expected to be one of the top QBs in the nation this season, and while he hasn't exactly been bad, he hasn't been that good either.
Defensively, the Wolfpack allowed 354 total yards and did not force any Clemson turnovers. That is not going to cut it, especially for a defense as talented as the Wolfpack's. The good news is they get a much more beatable team this week at home in Florida State, so we'll see if they can bounce back.
NC State is just a -3.5 favorite in this game, and I think we are giving the Seminoles a bit too much credit here. The Wolfpack are certainly the better football team, and while they have been somewhat disappointing overall, they should be a larger favorite than just -3.5. Florida State isn't quite ready to compete with these teams just yet.
Give me the Wolfpack -3.5.
