Matt Horner: Notre Dame +2500, DraftKings
I am a Notre Dame fan, but I assure you, no bias goes into this pick. We haven't won anything in a very long time, and chances are we won't this year with these 28/1 odds. However, I think it is worth a small play that the Irish can make a run in this new playoff format that college football will be implementing in 2024. Notre Dame is 19-7 during Marcus Freeman's two years as coach and much of the success has come because of an outstanding defense. Several of the stars on that side of the ball are gone, but the Irish defense could remain a strong unit with the return of safety Xavier Watts, tackle Howard Cross III, and linebacker Jack Kiser.
The offense has a chance to be much better with Mike Denbrock as the new offensive coordinator after he guided LSU's highly potent offense last season. Plus, Duke transfer QB Riley Leonard and former FIU receiver Kris Mitchell should both help see more production from that side of the ball.
Taking a look at the Irish schedule, which is always criticized despite having a tougher schedule than most SEC schools, it is relatively soft this season. USC and Texas A&M figure to be the toughest matchups on the schedule.
