BYU Cougars

It took two overtimes, but the Cougars got the job done against a very good Baylor Bears team last week. The 26-20 victory was a hard-fought match that could have gone either way, but it showed just how good this team really is. They are now 2-0 after that win and a blowout 51-20 victory in Week 1 against USF. Each week they are proving that they belong, and they have what it takes to be a real contender for the college football playoff.

BYU QB Jaren Hall has thrown for three touchdowns and 522 yards through two games, while running back Christopher Brooks has added 166 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars to start the year.

There's also no question that they are being challenged early, with a back-to-back here against Baylor and Oregon. That is a tough ask for a team to come out of 2-0, but the Cougars have the ability to do it. Traveling to face the Ducks will be extremely difficult, and I think home field had a bit of an affect on the Baylor game. The good news is that they have the offensive front to keep a talented Oregon defensive line at bay, and they have the veteran playmakers to get down the field and make plays.

Oregon Ducks

After getting crushed by Georgia in Week 1, the Ducks came out and crushed Eastern Washington, 70-14, in Week 2. They needed a tune-up game in the worst way imaginable, and that is why it is always bad to schedule a top-five opponent in Week 1 of your season. Now they get another very good opponent in BYU. If Oregon struggled against Georgia, they will likely struggle against BYU. Of course, the Cougars don't have the same talent as the Bulldogs, but they are still great in many of the same ways. BYU is great in coverage and stayed disciplined when making plays against Baylor. They can do the same against Oregon, and the Ducks will have to respond.

Bo Nix has done a decent job so far as QB of the Ducks. He's thrown for five touchdowns and two interceptions on the year. He's got the ability to make plays with his feet, but he'll also have time in the pocket to make plays with how good this offensive line has been in protection for him. They struggle to run block, however, and that could be a problem. The defense got smoked against Georgia, and you could argue that the Cougars offense is just as good or even better than the Bulldogs'. That also doesn't bode well for them.

BYU at Oregon Prediction: BYU +4

I like to think of BYU as this year's Cincinnati. They have a dynamic offense that can really test Oregon's defense, just like Georgia did, and I think the Cougar defense will play better in this game. If you are going to give me +4 with BYU, I am going to take it. I haven't been overly impressed with what I've seen from the Ducks, but I've loved what I've seen from the Cougars.
