Staff Picks To Win 2022 Heisman Trophy

Lucy Burdge: Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud (+240 at PointsBet)

I have a great feeling about Ohio State this season and the success I see them having could very well come from C.J. Stroud having a Heisman year. He earned 12 first-place votes last year and finished fourth in voting. And right behind him on this odds list is Bryce Young, who won it last year, and it is mighty difficult to win this award twice. Last season, Stroud completed 72 percent of his passes for 4,435 yards and threw 44 TDs with only six interceptions. I see him having a huge season again this year and like his odds to win this while they’re still at plus money.

Dan Karpuc: QB Malik Cunningham, Louisville (+6600 at DraftKings)
Last season, Louisville’s Malik Cunningham was the only quarterback to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards when he amassed 1,031 with 20 rushing touchdowns. Those 20 scores on the ground ranked fourth among all Division I players at any position. As a passer, he amassed 2,941 yards with 19 touchdowns and just six interceptions and proved to be a reliable dual-threat weapon for the Cardinals. The only issue: Louisville went 6-7, which included a 31-28 loss to Air Force in the Servpro First Responder Bowl. Cunningham will have some weapons in this year’s offense, will get four offensive line starters back and, in my opinion, this could be an eight-win team in the ACC (BetQL is projecting them to win 7.5 games after simulating all of their matchups 10,000 times). If this team overachieves, it will be because of Cunningham, who should have the potential for the coveted “Heisman moments” that are so important. At 66/1, I’m definitely taking a shot on someone who could follow in Lamar Jackson’s footsteps.

Brad Pinkerton: USC QB Caleb Williams +800 at PointsBet

While I think this award (and the national championship) will ultimately come down to Alabama QB Bryce Young vs. Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud, USC QB Caleb Williams represents the better value right now. Williams, a transfer from Oklahoma who followed coach Lincoln Riley to USC, will have a chance to put up monster numbers in a familiar offense against some soft Pac-12 defenses, especially with fellow transfer and NFL draft prospect WR Jordan Addison at his disposal. That should put USC in the running for the CFP and Williams among the favorites for the Heisman by midseason, at which point you can decide whether to cash out for a nice profit or let it ride.
