There is no clear cut favorite in the Sun Belt where you are having to lay odds, but as of this writing, Marshall is the favorite to win the conference tournament. This is looking like a one-bid conference for the NCAA Tournament, which means the stakes will be extremely high when these teams arrive in Florida, so expect fierce competition. There are also a few sleepers that could play spoiler to some of the better teams.

2023 Sun Belt Conference Tournament Picks & Predictions

Sun Belt Winner Best Bet: Marshall (+200)

In a seriously competitive conference, the Thundering Herd stand out. They are actually seeded as the third seed right now, but there is a reason they are still favored. Head coach Dan D’Antoni, brother to the more famous Mike, has his team well-positioned to represent the Sun Belt and they are also an extremely enjoyable team to watch.

Marshall has the second-most efficient offense in the conference, according to KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency. Taevion Kinsey and Andrew Taylor comprise one of the most explosive backcourts in college basketball. They are averaging 42.4 points per game this season, and with a combination like that, it seems hard to go against them in this spot. Marshall will have a high floor in this tournament with their ability to score the basketball better than anyone else.

Sun Belt Winner Sleeper Pick: South Alabama (+850)

The Jaguars are fifth in the Sun Belt in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency margin, which is exactly what their odds are to win the tournament. As Marshall has one of the better offenses in college basketball, South Alabama can rely on its defense. The Jaguars are tied for fourth in the conference in adjusted defensive efficiency, and being able to shut down opponents is all-important when it comes to the tournament.

Their offense isn't great, but they do have a sleeper I like for MVP in Isaiah Moore if they do make a run at this thing. Moore is averaging 18.5 points per game this season and has been the spark plug for the Jaguars offensivly. If they can pull all of this together at the right time, they could pull off a few upsets.

Sun Belt Winner Deep Sleeper Pick: Old Dominion Monarchs (+3000)

Old Dominion is a team that I have backed quite frequently in spots this season, as I did when they faced Marshall recently and beat them outright. Obviously, this is a longshot at 30/1 odds, but the Monarchs have had a tendency this season to hang tough when they face much more talented competition. They are 19-11 overall and 16-12 ATS this season, and have already beaten the conference favorite and covered against them twice. They are 11-7 in the conference and can certainly make a bit of a run if they continue to keep things competitive.

Chaunce Jenkins had led the way, scoring 13.8 points per game, while Tyreek Scott-Grayson is right behind him at 13.6. They are well-rounded and play sound defense, which again, is important in the tournament. Holding Marshall to 67 points was actually very impressive with the offense they have.
