Conference tournament time is here and BetQL is your source for best bets, sharp picks, public data, historical trends and so much more every single day for every single game! Per our friends at Caesars, these are the odds to win the 2023 Patriot League Conference Championship:
Colgate -200, Lehigh +550, Army +900, Navy +1000, Boston University +1200, Loyola +2200, Bucknell +2200, Holy Cross +2500, American +3300, Lafayette +4500
As you can see above, Colgate (23-8, 17-1 Patriot League) is the clear favorite after losing only one game in conference play. Just three more teams (Navy, Lehigh, Army) finished with a record above .500 in conference play. This season was all about the Raiders and I suspect that Colgate point guard Tucker Richardson will win the conference’s Player of the Year award after leading the league in assists (5.2) and steals (2.1) while ranking sixth in scoring (14.1). Scroll down to see if you should back Colgate at these odds and find out which sleepers to consider.
Patriot League Winner Best Bet: Colgate (-200)
As I mentioned above, Colgate went 17-1 in Patriot League play and was utterly dominant. Ranking first in scoring (76.7 points per game), average scoring margin (+11.6), field goal percentage (51.4%), three-point field goal percentage (40.8%), average turnover margin (+2.44), and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.96) in conference play, this team earned a first-round bye and is the obvious favorite.
Colgate leads all of Division I in three-point field goal percentage at 40.6% (better than 362 other schools) and one of their sharpshooters Oliver Lynch-Daniels has hit 50.0% (68-of-136) of his long-range attempts while his teammates Ryan Moffatt and Chandler Baker have hit 44.8% and 43.7% of their deep balls, respectively. When three of the top four long-range shooters in the conference belong to one team, it’s pretty rare, but that’s the case with Colgate. They should be cutting down the nets and heading to the NCAA Tournament with no obvious major threat behind them.
Patriot League Winner Sleeper Pick: Lehigh (+550)
Lehigh is the third seed in the Patriot League tournament and therefore doesn’t get a first-round bye, but I like them for one main reason: their three-point defense. The Mountain Hawks have allowed their Patriot League opponents to shoot just 31.1% from beyond the arc this season, tops in the conference. They have the second-shortest odds to win, but I’d consider them a sleeper based on their price tag. If anyone is the best bet to get by Colgate, it's probably the team that would force them to play outside of their comfort zone: Lehigh.
Patriot League Winner Deep Sleeper Pick: Holy Cross (+2500)
The best overall player in the Patriot League might be Gerrale Gates, who led the conference in scoring (16.3 points per game) and rebounding (8.6 rebounds per game). The senior has been a steady source of production all year long for the Crusaders while guards Joseph Octave and Bo Montgomery have had impressive outings here and there.
Freshman Will Batchelder led the Patriot League in threes made per game and broke Holy Cross’ single-season record of total threes made this year, so if three or four of the aforementioned players shows up and delivers with ceiling performances, this team can beat anyone in the conference. Note: I am a Holy Cross grad, so I may be slightly biased. Bet with caution! Seriously though, don't count this team out; I've seen them play in person four times this year and when they're clicking, they can beat any team in this league.
