College basketball fans are in for a treat this Wednesday, December 18, with a slate full of intriguing matchups and sharp betting opportunities. From ranked showdowns to mismatched blowouts, there’s value to be found across the board. I’ve identified three games that stand out for sharp bettors, including Virginia taking on Memphis, Michigan looking to rebound against undefeated Oklahoma, and Arizona in a bounce-back spot against Samford. Let’s dive into the picks and break down why these bets are worth your attention.
NCAAB - Virginia (6-4) +4.5 vs. Memphis (8-2): -110, BetMGM
I got this number early this morning at +5, so full disclosure on the number that I have money on. That is not available anymore, with the best number being +4.5 in the market, but I still think that is worth a bet. I wouldn’t bet it if I didn’t think they had a chance to just win the game outright, and I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see Virginia do that tonight against Memphis.
The Tigers are ranked No. 21 in the country and sitting pretty with an 8-2 record, while also coming off a big win against a ranked Clemson team. They have already built up an impressive resume this season as well, with wins over UConn, Michigan State and Louisiana Tech. Meanwhile, Virginia is just 6-4 and has lost two of their last three games, including blowout losses to Florida and SMU. They have not been ranked all season, either.
So, why are they just a very small underdog here against Memphis? Despite the majority of tickets and cash being placed on the Tigers, the line has moved from +6 yesterday at open to +4 in some places now. It is pretty clear that there is some respected money being wagered on the Cavs tonight, and I love their chances to cover the spread tonight. As I said, they just might win the game.
NCAAB - Michigan (8-2) -3.5 vs. Oklahoma (10-0): -102, FanDuel
I love college basketball so much. Just look at this line and tell me your first thought. It’s absolutely beautiful. By now, you should know exactly why we are betting this, but it is my job to explain it anyway so I will.
Oklahoma hasn’t lost a single game all season, sitting at a perfect 10-0 and ranked No. 14 in the country. They have covered in four of their last five games as well, with wins over Oklahoma State, Louisville, and Arizona. Michigan is 8-2, ranked 10 spots lower than the Sooners, and coming off a loss to unranked Arkansas in their last matchup.
Read that information and ask yourself why the Wolverines are a -3.5 favorite against an undefeated Oklahoma team that is on fire right now. This is an incredibly obvious trap by the oddsmakers, so much so that I am even beginning to wonder whether this could backfire. Even the squarest of squares have to raise an eyebrow at this. We’ll see what happens, but I have already bet on them, so I’m locked in.
NCAAB - Arizona (4-5) -19.5 vs. Samford (9-2): -110, BetRivers
This one doesn’t involve a ranked team, but Arizona is prominent enough as a program that I am comfortable playing it for a unit. The Wildcats have been a massive disappointment this season, with a losing record through nine games and in the midst of one of their worst starts in program history. This is one of the premier basketball programs, so for them to start like this is quite bad.
Meanwhile, Samford is 9-2 and has won five straight games coming into this one. Granted, they haven’t beaten anyone of note, but they still have been very successful. So why is a team that is 4-5 on the year laying nearly 20 points against a team that has nine wins? You just know a ton of squares are going to take all of those points with a team that has been as good as Samford against a Arizona team that has been a huge letdown.
I think we see a total blowout here with the Wildcats ripping the Bulldogs a new one, showing them that even a losing power conference team is far better than a winning small conference squad.
