The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference should be a competitive one this year, but there is one team that certainly stands above the rest, and that is Iona. Led by Hall of Famer and 2022 MAAC Coach of the Year Rick Pitino, the Gaels were once again the team to beat in the conference. They boast easily the best record in the conference, and have been almost unbeatable at home, with just one loss on the year there. Rider and Siena are the two teams with the best chance to upset them.
2023 C-USA Conference Championship Picks & Predictions
MAAC Winner Best Bet: Iona (-150)
It is really hard for me to bet against Iona in the MAAC. According to MAAC's official site, they have won six out of the last 10 MAAC tournament titles dating back to 2013 which also includes nine total championship final appearances since 2011, the most by any MAAC school during that time span. In addition to the postseason success, the Gaels have a league-best five regular season titles since 2011-12. Simply put, they have been the best team in this conference every year by a pretty wide margin, and that is no different in 2023. Iona led the conference in pretty much every statistical category, and dominated almost every team they have come against in conference play. I'd be shocked if they don't take home the title this year yet again.
MAAC Winner Sleeper Pick: Manhattan (+5000)
It's difficult to pick a team outside of Iona to win this conference, but if there is a team that is getting large odds that might be able to do it, that would be Manhattan. I would love them a lot more if they still had their superstar Jose Perez, but he transferred to West Virginia. Still, this is a very experienced team. The Jaspers returned three out of five starters from a year ago and five out of seven key players that scored 120 or more total points in 2021-22. They are also led by two-time MAAC Championship-winning head coach Steve Masiello, so they have the guidance that is required to win in the postseason.
Without Perez, they took a step back in 2022-23, but they still maintained that tough defense that led the conference with 7.17 steals per game and held its opponents to a league-low 33.7 rebounds average last year. It's their defensive intensity that gives them a shot when the defense is what matters most.
MAAC Winner Deep Sleeper Pick: Fairfield (+10000)
The one thing that Fairfield can boast is that they shoot the three-pointer well. That at least gives them an outside chance to make a bit of a run. Now, they are lacking pretty much everywhere else, and there is a reason they had a poor record this season. It's certainly a longshot, but if you can shoot the three at a pretty high-level, you at least have a chance in today's game of basketball.
Plus, they have a guy named Supreme Cook on the team. Can you imagine the scenes if Supreme Cook was able to cook up a few game-winners? I can already see it now on the highlight reels.
