College Basketball Betting Picks: NCAA Championship

Purdue +8 (-135, DraftKings)

We have finally arrived at college basketball's national championship game, and no one is more hype than your boy, who has been crushing this March Madness tournament so far.

We're up well over 10 units, so no matter what, we are ending this thing in the green. However, one more game remains, and it is the two teams that have made me and lost me the most money over the last month.

I have bet on Purdue ATS in every single one of their games in this tournament, and they have covered every one of them and made me Jeff Bezos. Everyone wanted to fade them after they had choked countless times in previous tournaments, but this was the year they didn't and made it to the championship game.

In contrast, the Huskies would have made me homeless if not for the rest of the tournament, as I have faded them every single game and they have covered every game as well. I kid you not when I say that over 50% of my ATS losses in this tournament were all on UConn.

Something has got to give tonight between two teams that always cover. I'm going to continue to stick to my guns and the strategy that has won me so much money overall, and that is to continue to back the Purdue wagon at this large number.

I'm going to need Zach Edey to continue to be a foul-generating machine in order for this to happen. That will be easier said than done against this Huskies team. However, if they have to do what everyone else has had to do (which is foul him constantly to avoid an easy bucket), then we have a chance.

Dan Karpuc: UConn -6.5 (-110, FanDuel)

Over the last two NCAA tournaments, Connecticut has gone 11-0 ATS and has won each game by an average of 22.3 points per game, covering by 12.9 points per contest. Dating all the way back to 2009, they’ve gone 27-6 ATS in NCAA tournament games. And, over the last two seasons, they’ve gone 32-1 SU (28-5 ATS) against non-conference opponents, including the regular season. Talk about dominance!

Even though Purdue has been the second-best team in college hoops all season, in my opinion, and has gone 5-0 ATS on their own in this tournament, I really like how UConn stacks up against them, most importantly because future NBA center Donovan Clingan has the size (7-2) to match up against Edey (7-4). I view Clingan as the more athletic, better overall player and I think we’re going to all watch that play out tonight. I also think that you can make the case that First-team All-American Tristen Newton, Cam Spencer, Alex Karaban and potential one-and-done freshman Stephon Castle are all better than their matchups in Purdue’s starting five. There’s no way I’m going to fade the defending champs. U-C-O-N-N, UCONN, UCONN, UCONN!

Kate Constable: UConn -6.5

Purdue’s entire offense runs through Zach Edey and the Boilermakers haven’t faced anyone who can match up well enough with him for the majority of the season. Enter the UConn Huskies and Donovan Clingan. He has the height and athleticism to defend Edey, making it so the Huskies don’t have to double him (or foul) as much as other opponents. That also means UConn’s perimeter defenders don’t have to help as much, allowing them to put more pressure on Purdue’s guards than they’re used to. It’s also worth noting that as a conference, the Big East is 7-0 SU in NCAA tournament championship games since 2001, while the Big Ten is 0-7 SU. 

Lucy Burdge: UConn -7.5 (-105, BetMGM)

This is truly a matchup of the two best teams in college basketball facing each other for the national championship with the two most impactful players in Zach Edey and Donovan Clingan facing off. And I am all-in on UConn to win the whole thing. The Huskies have been my pick to win the national championship all along, so there’s no way I’m not backing off of them now, and I think they will do this by at least 10 points and cover this spread. They have been blowing out teams like crazy and I just think they are way too dominant to not cover this spread against Purdue and repeat as national champions.
