Tennessee vs. Butler Preview (Battle For Atlantis)

Tennessee and Butler square off in the Battle for Atlantis in the Bahamas. Tennessee is the better team coming into this matchup for a variety of reasons. For starters, they’re ranked in the top-25 in the nation in a number of different categories. They are a strong rebounding team, especially on the offensive end where they rank T41. That leads to plenty of put backs and second chance opportunities, something the Bulldogs can’t afford to give up. Tennessee also knows how to get to the free throw line, ranking 24th in the country in charity stripe attempts. And, the Vols bench is also much more impressive than that of Butler, which means their second unit should be able to not only withhold any lead they might have but could even extend it while their starters get a breather.

Butler is coming into the season without super high expectations. Thad Matta is back as Butler’s head coach, but that means a new system to go along with a lot of new faces on the team. NC State transfer Manny Bates has been the headliner in the early going of the year. He struggles to shoot outside but is strong in the post on both sides of the floor. Tennessee’s defensive weakness is their interior defense so that should be an area where the Bulldogs look to capitalize.

MY PICK: Tennessee -7.5. Butler may keep this game close in the first half but will struggle to keep up with Tennessee’s scoring through the entirety of the game. The Vols should win this game by double digits as long as they shoot the ball well. The only thing that might throw that off is the fact that this game is going to be played in a ballroom and not an arena, so keep that in mind.

Pepperdine at UCLA Preview

Pepperdine hits the road for a two-game road trip Wednesday when they travel to Los Angeles to take on the No. 19 UCLA Bruins. The Bruins have won seven straight against the Waves and are a heavy favorite in this game.

Pepperdine’s Maxwell Lewis is one of the more exciting players to watch in all of college basketball and will need a strong offensive showing if the Waves want a chance at upsetting the Bruins. Lewis is averaging 17.2 points per game and has shown that he can score at all three levels. Pepperdine is also one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country, ranking 5th while shooting 45.8% from deep. Defending the three point line is an area that UCLA has struggled in this season, so the Waves should be able to have success from beyond the arc.

UCLA’s struggles to defend the perimeter were put on display in their last two outings. They played in the Main Event in Las Vegas and suffered two straight losses to Illinois and Baylor. Granted both of those teams are ranked in the Top 20, the Bruins still allowed both teams to go a combined 22-53 from deep. I expect that to be an emphasis on defense for Mick Cronin’s team knowing the damage that Pepperdine can do.

MY PICK: UCLA -17. Despite their defensive struggles these last two games, the Bruins are still a much better team than Pepperdine. UCLA has the depth and experience to take down the Waves who haven’t won a road game in 13 straight outings. Plus, I expect UCLA to come into this one motivated and ready to get back to their winning ways.

Arkansas vs San Diego State Preview (Maui Invitational)

The Maui Invitational wraps up on Wednesday evening with the third place game between No. 9 and No.17 San Diego State. Arkansa found themselves here by way of losing to Creighton in the semifinals while SDSU got bounced by Arizona. With two top-20 teams going head-to-head, I like this to be a high-scoring affair.

Arkansas freshman Anthony Black is someone who I was excited to watch coming into this season and so far he hasn’t disappointed. He’s averaging 14 points per game on 53% shooting from the field, 37.5% from three, and just put up 26 points against Creighton. That’s pretty good for a freshman if you ask me! Their 90-87 loss to the Blue Jays saw plenty of scoring with both teams combining for 177 points. While I don’t expect the Razorbacks to put up 87 points on back-to-back nights, I still think their offense will have success.

San Diego State offense went quiet in the second half of their semifinal loss to Arizona, but that’s fairly uncharacteristic of this team, especially with Matt Bradley and Lamont Butler who are two players that know how to put the ball in the hoop. This is also a team that wants to play fast and get out in transition. The Aztecs rank T37th in fast break points, averaging 16.3 per game, so I expect this to be a fast-paced, high-scoring game.

MY PICK: Over 144.
