Both Baylor and West Virginia are 0-3 in Big 12 play and in dire need of a win. I’d argue that there is a little bit more desperation on the Bears' side being this is their worst conference start in 15 years. Their last two losses have been one-possession games against TCU and K-State and the problem in those games was defense and turnovers. Defense is all effort, and coming into this game desperate for a win and an answer, I would be shocked if we didn’t see a better defensive effort from the Bears. Offensively, Baylor has the talent and 3-point shooting ability to overpower the Mountaineers, so give me the Bears to win this one outright.
My pick: Baylor ML
No. 4 Alabama travels to take on No. 15 Arkansas in a matchup between two of the most talented teams in the SEC. Both teams have freshmen that are likely lottery picks in this year’s NBA draft and they know how to score. The Tide's offense ranks 18th, according to KenPom, while the Razorbacks come in at 44th. However, their defenses are even better, ranking in the top 10 in the country, and I expect them to show up big tonight. Arkansas likes to do most of its scoring inside the arc and down low, which is where Alabama is great at defending. Meanwhile, the Razorbacks are great at half-court defense and forcing a ton of turnovers. That will allow them to disrupt the Tide's flow on offense, especially because Alabama has a really high turnover percentage. This is going to be a tough defensive battle tonight, so take the under.
My pick: Alabama at Arkansas Under 154
At 5-0 in the Big East, Xavier is the only team other than Providence to be undefeated in conference play. Creighton is looking to ruin that streak tonight in Cincinnati. The Bluejays have bounced back from their six-game losing streak, going 3-1 since, with their only loss to No. 6 UConn. Ryan Kalkbrenner is the man in the middle for Creighton and he can do damage down low. If Xavier takes that away, which they should be able to do with Zach Freemantle and Jack Nunge, Kalkbrenner is great at drawing defenders and kicking out to the perimeter, where Creighton shoots 3s at a high rate. The Musketeers struggle at defending the perimeter, ranking 297th in 3-point defense, according to KenPom, so if the Bluejays can get hot from deep, I like their chances at covering this number.
My pick: Creighton +3
