While all the talk goes to the Power 5 conferences and the big names in college basketball, some of the best value in college basketball futures comes in the mid-majors, the schools that no one hears about. One of my absolute favorite mid-major conferences is the Big West, which has a couple of schools that you probably have heard of, simply because they usually have a representative in the March Madness Tournament. Last season, UC Santa Barbara (or UCSB, as you might know them by) tied for the regular season crown with a tremendous year that ended in an NCAA Tournament bid.
The Gauchos are odds-on favorites to do the same thing again in 2023-24, sitting at a robust +260 number at most sportsbooks to win the Big West Conference. While they are certainly talented and have the best player in the conference in Ajay Mitchell, this is an absolutely loaded conference. UC Irvine is right behind them at +375 odds, and Long Beach is right there as well at +400. However, there is a team that I think should have similar odds, but for some reason is sitting at +700 at most sportsbooks. I love that value with the Rainbow Warriors.
Hawaii is being priced like they are a tier below these other teams atop their conference, and that really doesn't make any sense to me. They should be in the same price range in my opinion, so there is value here at +700. Let's not forget the type of talent that this team has, which is quite considerable, and they are returning two of the best players in the conference this season in JoVon McClanahan and Noel Coleman. Both of these guys will bring very valuable veteran experience and are all-conference players who make up the best guard combo in the league. This is also perhaps the most veteran roster in the conference as well, which will only help them.
Hawaii also has the advantage of being exactly what they are, and that is a school that is located in Hawaii. They have perhaps what is the best home-court advantage in the sport because of the travel for other teams, and they are a physical group of players that will make it that much more difficult for sleepy opponents.
In what should be an extremely competitive race to win this conference, I think this number with Hawaii just doesn't make much sense at +700, and they should be lined more closely with the other teams that are favored to finish at the top. Grab this number now, as I feel like others are going to feel the same way and bet this on the value alone.
